Title: What would you do ? - fix original engine or replace it?.

I've had my MKII 16v 3 door for over 4 years now, it's mint and almost completely standard apart from lowering springs. BBS are refurbed and the body is in outstanding condition as is the rainbow interior. My question is, looks like the engine has got a fault, won't hold coolant, water in the sump.

so I've bought a rebuilt engine - reground crank, new pistons, rings and it's all been painted up - just about to have the head done up too, but suddenly it dawned on me that if i'm removing the original engine - does this make it no longer the orginal car if you get what i'm saying, I have full service history, every mot from day one - am I removing some of it's value as the replacement engine is not the listed original item... I went down the replacement engine route because I had access to one and it was being built to go into my mates cab, plus I thought it an easier option without actually knowing how bad the current engine is ... it runs fine but has a faint rattle coming from the bottom end under heavy acceleration?

What do you reckon - replace engine or rebuild existing engine?.

as long as you have all the recipts in a file from day one i would say that alone would add another £200 to the value of any car...

Nothing people like more than FSH lol

i have a A4 folder with all the reicpts for my car starting from the first owner to me....

I would say go for it personally. You might upset a purist or two, but I think as long as you have the reciepts for the transplant to show it was wone properly, and get the documentation sorted with the DVLA - I think it might even help the value.

Don't quote me on that though :laugh:

A rebuilt engine is a rebuilt engine as far as i'm concerned.  So what it's not the lump that it originally came with.  It would be a different story if the replacement lump wasnt rebuilt  .

I would go ahead and fit the donor plant and keep the old plant,  then use it as a project during the long winter months later in the year,  using all OE parts,  that way you will gain new skills and have a completed refurbed OE engine ready for transfer next summer.

I'm going to have the original engine rebuilt personally.

There's just something that feels wrong about swapping it  :undecided:

I'm having the bottom end rebuilt since they don't keep many on the shelf anymore, but have purchased a second hand Pb head to port/polish then recondition. With a new Miltek ex header, new clutch and rebuilt gearbox.... should run lovely! :smug:
