Title: it wont start an it does something funny
Post by: mic on 20 January 2007, 09:43
having never owned a golf before i find it strange but it may be a common thing.
last night i took the stepdaughter out for her first lesson. was an experience. anyway, it took a while to get the bite point decent (ish) so spent some time kanagrooing. as it stalled loads of times the battery eventually wore out and resulted in me having to bump starting it....
i noticed that the digital clock stopped and everything lit up! even the rev counter went straight round to 7000rpm and didnt move.... i took the fuse out for the clock (number 21) and put it back in and it worked normal. again this morning i had the same thing. obviously it needs a good run, but whats with the clock/revcounter fuse? is that a sign of a low battery?

I've never heard of the rev counter doing what you describe but I think its linked to the battery going flat, when I've disconnected and then put the battery back on I've had to remove then replace the fuse as the Rev counter stops working and the MFA wont work until I do it. I would give the battery a good over night trickle charge and then see what its like

had a similar thing on my old rover, that was caused by a dodgy earth lead from the battery to body

yeah the mfa/rev counter will go dappy if it looses voltage, but check the earths to the battery & gearbox, and check all the earths to the side of the head and the one from the head to the coil bracket :)
