Hi Guys,
I am looking to replace my back box on my 97 8Valve, it has a Power Flow fitted just now and it has a very boomie noise when on long runs. :embarassed:
Could any one advise on a better make and less drone noise. as i think it is time for a change, i am looking for the twin round tail pipe. Some prices would give me an idea as well
Thanks again for any help.
PS i know there has been links about this before but you know fit like, it's good to talk.
Thanks again.

The Magnex BB fits the bill perfectly. Has twin 3" rolled pipes and is very quiet unless on full chat. Here's a pic of it on my 16v....I have a Sebring one now that fooking howls....and has twin 4 1/2 pipes...but I am a slag so it's ok

Cheers Hypermonkey....
Looks like that i am parting money for the Magnex Twin 3" for £150 from Venom Motorsport.
That Power-Flow that i have is doing ma nut in as i travel 100 mile a day . I have only had the Gti 8Valve for 2 Month as a second Car, i bought a Brand new Audi A3 Sportback Tdi S-Line  so the 8 Valve was bought for a run around.
Thanks again for the picc's and by the way looks like you have a smart 16v

So is the powerflow for sale?
Any pics if so?

Hi Black90,
I dont know if you want it as it has been on the car for a while i guess, i think around 5 years. It has a 10 year warrenty with it, but i just think it is past it's best. :undecided:
I live up North of Aberdeen about 1 hr drive, if you are close by you are more than welcome to have a look.
I dont know if i will have time for Picc's as the wife is going into Hospital 2 moro for our first child so time is going to be pretty tight. But will try if i get time.
Thanks again.

Well the new back box arrived yesterday, and guess what it doesn't fit
It is the very same one as the pic's above, but on my system from the middle box back there is no join  so the guy at my local exhaust & tyre fitters said the only way we could make it fit is to cut the pipe and make it fit
What would be the reason for this, have i ordered the wrong part!!!! I spoke to the guy at Venom Motorsport and he said it was the right part....so what is wrong or what is missing???
Do you guys think that the only way would be to cut the pipe :undecided:
What do you think
-
hi, you have the right part. It's just the way VW fit exhaust systems on the mk3 golf, the centre box and rear box came as one piece and was fitted before the axle. It's normal to have to cut the pipe, even if you goto VW main dealer to replace either the middle or back box, they'll cut the orignal pipe and fit whatever is necessary. There are 3 marks which indicate where the pipe needs to be cut, but you or the mechanic doing the job should measure this up with your new box.
HTH, Garfay.
-
Hi garfayliu, what a relief you have saved my going back on the phone and making an a@se of myself
Thank god for that, so is it easy to cut this pipe or is a pain in the butt???
Are these 3 lines easily visible to see, or as you said measure twice cut once....
Thanks again, i will sleep tonight.
-
no prob mate. the 3 lines are only a couple of cm long and space at 2cm intervals just before the axle bend, but measure twice cut once would apple more with the after market exhaust.
to cut it depends on what tools you have, I've used two, a proper large diameter pipe cuter which consists of loads of 2cm diameter cutting wheels, kinda like an oil filter removal chain, except chain is made of of the cutting wheels, that worked a treat and only took <5mins. I've also used a angle grinder on air hose, that still took about 15mins with another person holding the back box still, be careful of brakelines though.
see if you mechanic can do it, they might have proper tools, hacksaw might work, but its a confined space in the region you need to cut.

The magnex has a different fitting from centre to middle box...simply to get you to buy the Magnex centre section. A place like powerflow can cut the Magnex pipe down and open the end to fit your standard system.
I feel like a nob now as should have said this to you before but completely forgot. Powerflow should charge no more than £20-30 for fitting the BB and doing the cutting as all they have to do is measure.cut and join.

The saga goes on.....
Went down again to the tyre & Exhaust fitters this morning and told him about cutting the pipe.
But when i looked at it this was not going to work, as there was no way that the bend of the new back box which goes over the rear axle will line up with the middle box
So then it dawned on me, this was not the original exhaust system on the car as it had a Powerflow fitted way back in 2001 so this was the reason for miss alignment.
So back on the phone to Venom Motorsports and ask him do Magnex do Cat > back box only, he said i will have to phone Magnex and wait till Monday till he finds out
I have looked up the Lifetime Guarantee and it does say it had the Powerflow Cat back fitted in 2001 :embarassed: So who's to blame, my self for not checking before ordering or Venom for not asking if it was the standard system or modified????
Have you guys had this problem or is it just me??????????
-
Well Hypermonkey that explains alot  I have a Powerflow agent about 20 miles away and it was the agent who fitted the Powerflow way back in 2001. So as you said give them a try and see how i get on. I have only had the car 2 mth but have the Lifetime Guarantee stamped so i hope they can help me out.
-
Magnex do do the cat back part that will fit straight on, very solid piece of kit and will last forever. The one in the pics I posted had been on the car for a few years and done 30k but was as good as new.
If you have the £Â£s then I would defo suggest getting the Magnex centre as if you do decide to change pipes then you can sell the lot together....if not then make sure whoever cuts the pipe does it so it can fit onto a standard system or you may have probs in a resale.
Hope it gets sorted for you, and if we ever meet up I'll buy you a shandy or two as I do feel like a nob for not mentioning the fitment...totally forgot
-
Nae bother Hypermonkey  Thanks for all the info but will see what Monday says :undecided:
I am not blaming you for that wee mistake as it is easy done. I should have checked myself but there you go we are not all as good as each other...
Never mind, maybe will take you up on that shandy sometime if you are ever up across the Border up the Aberdeen way
Thanks again for you knowledge
-
oh well, hope you get it sorted, in the mean time just watch this, curtesy of hypermonkey.

I think we concluded a while back she was saying 'my t**s are on FIRE'

Howz it going, well we have some success, as i phoned my local Powerflow dealer today and he will manage to modify my Powerflow system to fit the new 3" twin round Magnex back box. This is taking place on Monday  So will keep you posted on the progress
