Mk1's look very nice. but you've got to take the bumpers off it, get some fat wheels and drop it. Although they are quite rusty.

it depends on what engine you want putting in really
give him a ring see what he says

would be cheaper if you bought the engine got the car ready for engine to drop in
less labour charges

wel jsut get the mk1 to begin with and get it on the road. i have ideas that i want to do to my mk2 but cant afford them yet. they will have to wait but at least im mobile. i would say get the car and then once youve got the money, then gor for the projects.

and i warn you now.. save for the insurace!!! i pay a bomb...im a new driver (like 2 months) and ive got a 1.6 so im payin around the 1800 mark. i know its steep but i wantd the car so bad!!

n its like 500 for a deacent mk1 then like 300ish for rims then coilovers then respray then the insurance

If you find a mk1 for £500 then depending on what rims you want they may be more than £300, then you need to put tyres on them, so lets say £150, coilovers are a minimum £500 (Weitec are supposed to be good), you'll need to uprate a load of bits too so brake upgrade alround, hmmmm, say £500, respray will be a minimum £1000 but more like £1500 - £2000 depending on how good a respray it is, i.e. blow over or a full on windows out restoration. Engine conversion can be anything if you don't do it yourself, so lets say £4000 for a 1.8 20vT (that's cheap by the way) and you add up what you'll spend without even getting a quote for insurance, which will be about 3k+ and that's if they will insure you !

I know it's a pipe dream and good on you and don't let anyone put you off, but at your age you need to get yourself a mk1 1.1 or 1.3 whatever and get a couple of no claims years behind you before looking at motors with engines that will kill you on insurance. Also, if you add up the numbers above you'll find that it will probably be easier to look on this and other VW forums in the for sale sections for ones that have already been done and someone else has either done or paid for the engine upgrade, brakes, suspension etc.

If you want a play with modding dubs then go to this website www.dubmodder.com and see what you can come up with. Welcome to the site by the way.

well a mk1 unless well looked after probably wont be for you , mk2 are fairly reliable and the 3s have a good reputation , what you have to remember is that your not buyin a ford
