Title: Some1 Help Me :@
Post by: Jayy on 17 January 2007, 19:04
Had a problem the cig/12v lighter socket in the dash, changed it for another one, now i got the (RED) Light that shines up around the cig lighter, and i got it shining into the ashtray, BUT theres no actual power coming though to anything e.g when i tired the tomtom or phone charger nothing came up!!

theres 3 wires which go into a plug which then goes into the cig lighter at the bottom, is it poss that one of them is damaged in the clip or sumit like that?

any help would be appricated?

and its not a fuse unless theres a hidden one somewere

Best thing to do is check if power is coming through to the connector plug by using a test light or multi meter, if you have power and an earth connection at the plug, the fault lies with the cig lighter, if no power then the fault must be further back in the loom.

Remember to test with the ignition on, I'm sure it cuts the power to the lighter when you turn off the ignition.

Theres 3 wires going in to the plug mate
(cant remember the colors off hand)

theres a light on the cig lighter what comes on when the lights are turned on that works!

so there must be some power coming through?

unless one wire is for the light and other 2 for the lighter

il try and find someone with a multimeter - what am i looking for tho on the screen? thanks

Yes there will be a separate power feed for the light and power to the lighter itself. As there are 3 wires, I would guess at 2 12v+ feeds and a common earth.

Set the multi meter to DC volts, mine for instance has a setting for 2v, 12v 200v, I would set it to 12v. Connect the black wire of the meter to a known earth point (any metal part of the car body - not painted, for instance the door striker) or the wire on the plug thats the earth - if you are lucky it will be brown or black!

Connect the red wire from the meter to the connections on the plug, you should get a 12v reading from 2 of the wires, if only one reading then you have a bad connection.

Hope this helps.
