Title: Would this be legal???? Front indicator's
Post by: boneybradley on 17 January 2007, 17:35
I currently have a set of crystal front indicator's and fog light's and the silver is now dull (as they leak when wet) and I am wondering what the legal requirement's are for the indicator's as i might spray the silver bit's black..... I have split the light's and it look's simple enough to paint!!! any idea's any one!!!!

It's definately different, I think i like it :)
Think this one will be a marmite mod.
Top marks for trying though, let us know when it comes to MOT time?

I've always wondered with smoking lights like that do you have to paint the outside of the lights? I take it those have been sprayed on the inside because there's a little frame around them of unpainted plastic - not that they look bad, I'm just wondering how people get around it.

my front indicators are completely black. i used black laquer on the outside of them. My MOT tester gave me an advisory for poor light output but still past them! i think it depends where you have your car tested?

i used to have a punto that i used the tint spray on to tint all the lights.... they didnt look very dark when i finished them, and only gave them 2-3 coats and 2 of the laquer.

MOT man gave an advisory on the front indicators saying that exact thing... poor light, 3 days later, turning right on a round-a-bout (while indicating i might add) the car approaching didnt stop and wrote it off.

his response to my 'i always thought u gave way to traffic on your right on a round-a-bout' was simply, that he didnt see my indicators, even though they were still on after he hit me.

moral of the story: be careful with smoked front indicators, people dont watch wat others are doing at the best of times, let alone when your indicators are as bright as they could be, crystals all the way now

That's where mine are now differnet...no smoke on the lenses (100% clear)....just the back bit's painted black and then my crystal clear lenses added. i didn't want smoked lenses and bought crstal clear (silver) and these lasted 6 month's before the silver peeled...hence now black

thought that was wat you had done.... IMO looks smart

how easy were the lights to take apart, and how did u go about softening / cutting through the sealent? just stick them in the over and wait for them to heat up enough to pull apart?  :undecided:

I poured boiling water over where the seal's are and with a bit of perswation apart they came..thought about the oven idea, but knowing what I have burnt over the years
I removed all traces of old sealant before I put them back together and used good old silicon sealer

im quite liking that idea.... i need to get my m3 rear apart as the indicators have got gay orange filters and the fried egg look isnt doing it for me.

might have to try that!!!

guess u just scraped the old crap off before applying new stuff....

The frames are fully painted..what you can see is the glass..I know they look framed due to the light design,No doubt they will change again before the summer!!! luckily i have a spare pair of gen smoked vw indicator's and a spare set of crystal fog's!!
