As I am rebuilding the top end of my engine I decided to do some detailing work on the rocker cover. I've stripped the paint off it and it's down to the bare metal. However I do like the look but if I fit the cover back on the way it is I know it'll be fine for a day and then rust up very quickly. Any suggestions on what I can use to prevent the rusting. Also if I was to paint it what type of paint should I go for? Is it worth doing a primer and then a couple of layers of colour then laquer? Any info would be appreciated.

make sure u use heat resistant paint/lacker and i think kurust is good to prevent the rust, it goes on as a base layer.
I used coloured lacker on mine , did the job nicely
-
Cheers for that. Would I be able to get kurust from halfrauds? And you used normal laquer?
-
hafords sell a kit which contains all you need to paint the engine/brakes but it is expensive. halfords also do their own paint which is cheep and quite good. i used it to paint my brake calipers on my moped and looks cool. With the paint you don't need lacquer as it will only melt. But be sure that the surface is cleaned be spraying. Hammerite can be used aswell i think.

just hammerite it! i've painted engines with hammerite and its been fine, they get alot hotter than rocker covers! if you're going to prime it use an etch primer on bare metal.
-
is hammerite ok for brake calipers and brake drums
-
Apparently so, I've never heard of anyone having problems with it. I went for BBQ paint in a can, nice understated matt finish - but I'm not sure it keeps the water out.

What's an Etch Primer?
-
ive used hammerite on my brake calipers and i have had no flaking etc. im guessing Etch primer is a heat resistant primer you put on first befour the hammerite. thats just at a guess though
-
Etch primer is a type of paint that etch's into the metal so it doesn't come off so easy, I don't know how heat resistant it is if at all !
-
^^^ what he said but its very heat resistant..... its the tried and tested way of making sure paint stays on the block.

Personally, I would go for satin black powder coat, cheaper to get done than you may think, if you shop around.. I just got my fan cowel shot blasted, and powder coated for £15, better than new, and will last forever..

I just removed the paint and rust with a wire wheel, not really fussed about the finish as it's my track car. All I wanted to do was spray it so that the rust would not come through and so that it looked better than the old black paint. Is etched Primer available from Halfrauds? and is it expensive. I was thinking of doing it hammerite silver to match what the body colour is (and I'll be using some of the same on the lower section of the body).

yeah halfords sell it...

Cheers Joe. Gonna get it done this weekend as the head is going back on and I am itching to drive the car (had it since August and it's not been on the road yet).
