I've got a 97R VR6 5-door and when cleaning it this weekend, I found to my horror that around where the rear door 'stopper' thingy (the arm that stops the door swinging open) rubber seal is, there is a whole lot of rust on both rear doors.
Anyone seen it before?
For it to be on both doors sounds a lot like a design problem, have I missed a re-call?

Had this same problem on my '97 P GTI, but thankfully got it sorted under the 6 year warranty. The one door was sorted before I bought the car and apparently in the early days VW used to replace the whole door...until they realised this was far too expensive. When I noticed the other door needed sorting VW put a new metal plate over the damaged area.

Cheers!
Did it have a fvwsh? If not, did they give you any grief about it?

I bought it privately with a FSH but only the first few years were VW. i know if you read in the manual it says the bodywork should be inspected every x number of years but when I went to VW they werent bothered at all....didnt even ask to see. They did look around the whole of the car for other areas of rust as well. The car was originally from them but they werent borthered. Suppose you are out of time now though?
