I have a 91 8V GTI and the clutch is no longer feeling smooth when I let it out, it feels as though its coming up a bit at a time (notchy feeling). I have been given a engine and gearbox from a 92 8V and have taken what appears to be a almost new clutch cable off and want to fit it to mine to see if it helps but upon inspection tonight I realized that the cable on there now is the self adjusting type and the one I've got is a manual one. Will it fit and if so is fitting them a b!tch of a job as I've never done one before or should I get another self adjusting one and fit that, or are they sh!t and not worth the trouble. Any advice appreciated !

both types will fit, but the self-adjusting ones are pants. Go into halfords and ask for a cable for an 89 1.6 driver, they'll sell you a manually adjust type. The manual cables have been discontinued from Halfords, so they were sellin em off for like £3
If you ask for a GTI one they'll sell you an auto cable.
