Title: ahh! head gasket?
Post by: 4 cylinder 8v fuel injected 205 killing machine on 20 January 2004, 22:41
???hi there just been out to thye beast gti 8v 1990 and after having a once over noticed white gunk in the filler cap. I have been using her for short trips this last fortnight so decided to whip the rocker cover off for a better look inside the roof of the cover was plastered in white residual as was the little round bit that comes out of the top of the rocker cover (the oil breather i think, has a weired spring thingy in it!)am wondering if this gunk is naturally occuring in these quantities or if its time to whip the head off get it skimmed, new gasket ect if this is the case does anyone have any tips and has anyone bought a head gasket recently ????
cheers in advance. ??? :'(

p.s oil on the end of dipstick looks pretty good i.e not like milk.

Condensation in the top of the engine, common for short journeys and especially this time of year.
Take it for a long drive, if mayo is still present on the cap then the gasket has gone. I suspect everything will be fine though!  :D ;)

I have the identical problem with my 8v (VR6 doesnt like 8v's :P)

My dad told me there is nothing to worry about as it goes away on long trips.

Gonna get it checked by a mate mechanic very soon.

Got quoted about ?300 if i was to get it done :-\

one other thing. are you loosing coolant? Im not so i think im alrite for now

What oil are using?
Crap oil will make the problem worse.

cheers for the reply, blue MK2 and golf VR6 (why you not like 8v)I so so hope you are right!
well i`v cleaned it all up shall nail it all back together tomorrow and give it a go. no noticable coolant leak there was some in the resivoir but i have had a split radiator for a fortnight although a bit of the old rad weld has sorted it till pay day!!! but there was certinally no massive loss of coolant, my main concern is the amount of gunk on the inside of the rocker although i am hoping and praying that it`s just a build up over time!!

I don't mind 8v's at all, just done a service and cambelt on one (Veedubgti8v's car). Just laugh when mk3 owners say their 8v's are fast  :D
I expect you won't have a problem, take it for a motorway drive as soon as poss , then post back with results.
Good luck   :D

I would try cleaning the breather or fit a new one as your getting the vapour building up on the underside of the cam cover.

Also like VR6 said you need to do decent journeys that allow your engine to warm up.

Are breathers ment to be sealed ontop?

when i cleaned mine i noticed an air leak on the top corner of the breather.

Could this lead to airleaks also?

yay  ;D the joy I gave it all a good clean (in the bath, divoirce proccedings in the post I am told!) took it for a good blast got home checked the filler cap and its lovley and black  ;D .Blue MK2 my breather was complketly sealed testoment to this was the ball ache i had getting it apart, I belive it has an effect on the engine as i had the engine running (warming her up) when I fitted mine and it made a noticable difference to the revs.

Well cheers for the help one and all now just need to sort out the red hot rear wheel that smells of brake dust, I wonder what that could be.................................
