Title: Petrol Gauge Problem
Post by: patch900 on 14 January 2007, 16:17
Filled up my Mk3 at the garage to the top with petrol (the pump cut out).

Got in and drove around and the fuel gauge took ages to go up to 1/2 tank and then bloody ages to only reach 3/4 full.

Has anybody seen this before or knwo what could be wrong ?

The gauge sender is on top of the tank. Perhaps it's having a wobble. The measurement on Mk3s also seems to be gradient dependent. When driving down hill it often looks fuller than driving up hill. Maybe worth looking at the sender to see if the contacts are a little corroded, it's under the plate held on by three screws under the boot carpet I think.

You did turn the ignition off when filling up didn't you???? as mk3's have a problem of if you add fuel when on the gauge play's trick's....i had a similar problem before as I all way's left the ignition on (to stop the immobiliser and alarm coming into play) and the gauge never read correctly until she was nearly empty again and now she is ok
