I have bought a GOLF GTI Edition 30. I was the first to buy at my local dealer and expecting early March,
The spec is
MFSW
5 door, red, dsg
Ipod / armrest
Sun roof
Xeons
Highline
Parking sensors
Now I like my music and stereo. I am used to using tom toms and the sat nav set up in the golf is just poor.
I would like to get something a bit special. Preferably sat nav / touch screen / good music that fits flush on the dash.
Any recommendation which is the best headunit?
Will it work with the MFSW?
What speakers to add (if at all)?
Do I get the I pod option from factory so that this links with the after market cd/sat nav unit?
anything I should add from the factory option list to make the final set up better ( I was thinking theRCD 500 will give 10 speakers spaces)?
I was thinking something between 1000-2000 pounds but can always go a little bit more to get perfect.
Looks/wow factor are very important to me and would like a nice clean finish. I like the large LCD screens.
The pioneer looks good http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/pna/v3/pg/division/demo/0,,2076_310069681,00.html#unit=AVIC%20Z1
Would the phone on/off button on the MFSW work ?
I was reading (on this site) that the Alpine is a better fit? The fit is important to me. Would be nice to have phone/sat nav/music but if the fit is not perfect then the phone can go. Even the sat nav can go (as I can use tom tom which I love). But would like a nice sound set up.

Hi
You can't go wrong with the Pioneer navi units - I have them in my works vans and they have never let me down!
Nice unit - security would be my only issue!
-
Hi Doc - thanks for the reply. I have sent an email to your yahoo address to check fitting prices for me to pass my new baby to you for the fitting and supply if that is possible.

why on earth did u only get midline computer, ????? its only a little extra for highline, considering you plan to "blow" upto 2 grand on a radio!!
-
sorry chatty, ignore my prevoius post , mis-read your spec and abrivations.Simular spec to my gti, good choice my friend.Hope you enjoy your new toy

Hi Phil - looking forward to the new car. actually i like the look of the vw factory fitted one but cant justify the price tag for the performance. if you compare tom tom 1 at 150 quid and what a good cd player is the extra 1500 (actually is 1800 but take out ipod and armrest bit) the extra 1500 is hard to justify.
So, my theory is take the 1500 and get something worth the money. i may well end up spending less. Have been recommended onto another site http://www.talkaudio.co.uk/vbb/forumdisplay.php?s=279ef7c0928373c769ee50bc78b50987&f=4&page=2&order=desc for some forum chat on options.
I misread things all the time as well.

That AVIC-Z1 really looks the dogs. Loads of features and very user friendly. Wish I'd gone for that instead of the factory Sat Nav now
Tried the Panasonic UK site and it is not listed there yet - currently only in USA ?

HI Cass - thanks for the info. THe make is Pioneer (thats why it is not on the panasonic site). I also think that it is a better fit from what i am finding out. Looks like ther is 2 main players. Pioneer and Alpine (sure there are many many, but these are the 2 that keeping popping up). Have seen some pics with the Alpine fitted and it does not look perfect to me. I have not seen any photos of the pioneer but there is some on the pioneer usa site for VW car, but cannot identify the model. I am going to speak to our local car audio specialist tomorrow and see if the pioneer is the one. All in all the pioneer looks the biz. I wonder how well it intergrates with the MFSW and ipod connection in the armrest?

-

What a noob - I meant the Pioneer UK site of course

Hi Cass - well they both begin with P which is enough to confuse half the population.
-
Northern half anyway
Tired and emotional Spurs fan tonight - that's my excuse anyway
Seriously though - that Pioneer kit really is something else.

I was looking on the net for some pics and found a thread on the VW Vortex forum, however the pics were no longer there, so I emailed the guy whos in the states and he sent me the following reply:
I have had the system for about half a year now and I love it. The only problem I have is the bluetooth system. It has pretty bad reception and I always end up just picking up the phone. I am hoping they come out with an updated version sometime soon. So If you do decide to go with the Z1, dont get the Bluetooth, wait a few months and hopefully something will come. Also, check out www.avic411.com. Go to the Z1 forums and you will find a lot of great information. Good Luck!

looks like the install is in a Mk4 Golf, but still cool. shame about the bluetooth phone connection, as I have a Parrot system which works perfectly, so I'm not paying £2000 for a crap phone set up!

Nothing yet - please re-post

HI FELLAS, I KEEP READING ON THE SITE THAT SOME OF YOU ARE STILL MENTIONING THE ipod CONNECTION IN THE ARM REST ON YOUR NEW CARS. I DONT KNOW IF IT IS ALL GTI'S BUT MY EDITION 30, DUE IN 1/3/2007  WAS HAVING THIS FITTED. I WAS ADVISED BY MY DEALER LAST YEAR THAT THERE IS A PROBLEM WITH THE ipod CONNECTION FOR UK CARS . I HAVE SORTED MINE WITH AN INDEPENDENT AUDIO MAN. IF YOU ARE WAITING FOR A CAR WITH THIS CONNECTION YOU NEED TO SEE YOUR DEALER, OTHERWISE YOU MAY HAVE A PROBLEM WHEN IT DOES ARRIVE. I HAVE HIGHLIGHTED THIS PROBLEM ON OTHER PAGES OF THE SITE MIND IT IS GETTING BIGGER EVERY DAY
-
I have a 56 plate GTi, with ipod connection, could you please let us know what the problem is on this thread?
cheers
Paul
-
I called my dealer about this who said the problem is only with the USB connection. Ipod connection is fine and still available. Thats for the GTi, shouldn't of thought it differs for the Ed 30.
MrTibbs - you mentioned elsewhere that you have 'loaded up your Zen'. Assuming you are referring to the Creative Zen, then it seems logical to assume that this does not run through the ipod dock...
-
In the new brochure & options list the USB dock in the armrest has been removed. The I-pod dock is still there. I spoke to the dealer today and he confirmed the above. (However they didn't know about the original problem until after Mr Tibbs had informed me!) The sales manager said that he had tried three different MP3 players and could only get pen/flash drives to work in the carsequiped with the USB connection.
So two questions:-
So.. in theory you can still plug in an I-pod into the USB socket if you used an I-pod usb cable?
Does the I-pod list the track names?
He also gave me the good news that my new car will be built next week. Build week 4?
cheers TagnuT

In a word, No! Not even with sat nav.
