Yeah common fault.

I avoid the 'crunch' by letting the revs drop before selecting 2nd then changing gear.

2nd gear worn synchromesh. Gearbox oil change might help a bit, hold the clutch down for longer when selecting 2nd when box is cold.

weighted shift rod of a mk3 rod change box will help dampen the crunch

i.e. its still there but you wont feel it as much

Mine does the same when cold. I avoid it by knockin it out of first, pausing, then putting it into second :)

Speedy Dub. I pause it too. Its dangerous on busy roundabouts thou :o

all the rod does is add extra inertia to the throw of the gear change

if the actual stick feel loose then you probably need the bushes & relay shaft ball replaced, as well as the one at the bottom of the gear stick itself

have a read through this

Also you may have to change the socket at the bottom of the gear stick. If its really easy to slip it into reverse (i.e. you either don't have to press the stick down or only a tiny amount to do so) then look here:

VW still sell the kit as I bought one for me MK2 driver in October of last year, not too hard to fit but you'll need 2 people!
