I get a crunch when i put it into 2nd at anything above about 3000. Cars done 107k on origional box. Any ideas or just general recon?
-
my mk2 has always done it in second when cold
but i have heard it could just be a worn syncro
-
Yeah common fault.
I avoid the 'crunch' by letting the revs drop before selecting 2nd then changing gear.
-
try swopping your gear oil for synthetic this can help a little
-
Yeah but when its only a 1.6 driver i need all the revs I can get to keep up with them damn horrible minging annoying saxo efforts.
Cheers oakie ill be down the shops tomorow

2nd gear worn synchromesh. Gearbox oil change might help a bit, hold the clutch down for longer when selecting 2nd when box is cold.

weighted shift rod of a mk3 rod change box will help dampen the crunch
i.e. its still there but you wont feel it as much

Mine does the same when cold. I avoid it by knockin it out of first, pausing, then putting it into second :)
-
Gambit. will this rod stiffen my loose gear change aswel?
Speedy Dub. I pause it too. Its dangerous on busy roundabouts thou :o
-
all the rod does is add extra inertia to the throw of the gear change
if the actual stick feel loose then you probably need the bushes & relay shaft ball replaced, as well as the one at the bottom of the gear stick itself
have a read through this

Also you may have to change the socket at the bottom of the gear stick. If its really easy to slip it into reverse (i.e. you either don't have to press the stick down or only a tiny amount to do so) then look here:

VW still sell the kit as I bought one for me MK2 driver in October of last year, not too hard to fit but you'll need 2 people!
