Title: How would....?
Post by: JMallows on 13 January 2007, 14:38
How would a 1.8 Driver compare to an 8V GTI? Only, i was thinking of getting a 1.6 driver (One os going cheap near me) And getting it bored to a 1.8, or maybe more if its possible?

Ideas?

Thanks :)

well to give you an idea of figures:

1.6 Driver - 75bhp (there or there abouts)
1.8 Driver - 90 bhp
1.8 8v GTI 112bhp

I had a 1.8 driver engine in my scirocco, it picked up well with the scirocco being quite light but never set the world alight and ran out of puff at about 5000 rpm (a GTI cam would fix that prob though ) , my old 8v mark 2 gti would eat it for breakfast though I think.

having said that it would feel quick compared to a 1.3 (if i am right in thinking thats what you have at the moment  :undecided:)

I would say that that it's not worth boring out a 1.6 driver engine to 1.8 for such a small performance increase.
If you did other mods too like a weber carb and performance cam and so on, then the performance might be worthwhile, but for the money it would cost, you might as well just go for an 8v GTI.

You don't need to bore the block out, change the pistons and rods out of the 1.8, the blocks are the same.

I thought the blocks were the same but the bore size was different?
