Title: electric mirrors
Post by: Dizzie on 20 January 2004, 19:33
got myself my passenger's side mirror, switch and loom today from the scrapper for ?15. I ripped out the dead mk2's dash so I could remove the loom in 1 peice and didn't have to cut it at all.

Is it possible to remove the motor part of the mech from the mirror and put it in a manual mirror as the ones on my car are colour coded and the electric ones are not?

I shall beginning wiring them up when the driver's side mirror shows up.

Post by: Blue MK2 on 20 January 2004, 20:26
are all the leccy mirrors heated? :o

i hope they are! ;D
Title: Re:electric mirrors
Post by: Blue MK2 on 20 January 2004, 20:28
another thing..

where does the leccy mirror switch sit? do i have to cut holes to mount it ???
Title: Re:electric mirrors
Post by: Dizzie on 20 January 2004, 20:31
the switch goes in the hole the adjuster leaves on the drivers side. a grommet goes in the other side...

aparently all proper mirrors are heated. I didn't know that until someone just said.

right. the actual mirror pulls off. I've been told to be carefull when doing this...

then there's 4 screws to remove the motor part. the 4 wires just push into the back of the motors. this is lablled so you don't wire them up wrong when  you put them into the new shells.

There's another 4 screws that bolt the metal to the shell. you dont' need to undo these I don't think. Then I'm hoping it the same for the manual mirrors. it's a bit late to go working on the car outside now.

I've had a look on my Driver and the mirror shells LOOK identical, but without actually trying it I cant tell, I'll need to do the same as you on one of me mirrors cos one of the leccy ones I have has all the mounting screws broken off the mirror shell.  I got my set with most of the loom for ?35, it pays to look thru all the Golf classifieds :D

I've just bolted the motors into my colour coded shell this morning so they are the same. I'll rip out the dash tomorrow and lay the loom. I've got work in 20 mins.

Are the motors identical drivers side and passenger side?

And does any one have a spare motor?

The electric mirrors are heated and are switched via the rear heated window switch.

Post by: Blue MK2 on 21 January 2004, 21:29
ohh thats perfect. I was wondering how they would switch on and off ::)

cheers

I'm pretty sure the feed comes off the back of the fuse box, most late golfs have the heated washer jets and I think its all off the same feed.
Title: Re:electric mirrors
Post by: Blue MK2 on 21 January 2004, 21:45
Yeah i got heated washer jets too.

I hope mine come without cut wires. I cant be botherd to fiddle with wiring in this cold weather

so your saying..rear heated window, heated washer jets and heated mirrors are off one switch? i.e the rear window heater switch?
Title: Re:electric mirrors
Post by: modulater on 21 January 2004, 21:52
Yeah thats pretty much it.

I am say that the heated rear window switch controls them, without looking at the wiring I would say that this is just the switching circuit and that the power feed comes from the back of the fusebox as it seems like a lot of current draw to run through the one switch.
Title: Re:electric mirrors
Post by: Blue MK2 on 21 January 2004, 22:57
ohh yeah true, heating element would draw alot of current.

thanx its more clear to me now. :-*

there's a green and white wire I cut from the main loom for the mirrors. I'm guessing that's the one that links to the switch. From what I can see the mirrors get their power from the ignition, which doesn't seem right somehow. Should be a relay in there like the windows. the mirrors work off the same relay btw.

I shall be pulling my dash out (again) tomorrow morning and laying the loom tidy. Will report on the wiring when it's done :)

this should help :)
yellow/black to power through window relay
green/white to loom through switch
brown... do I really need to say?

cheers Dizzy.

Ive just recieved the mirrors. I know that the brown is earth, the green/white is the switch and the black/yellow is the (+)

what about the other wires? They arent cut wires but have connectors on either sides of them on the mirror loom.

should i worry about these?

im guessing that some connectors on the loom go behind the fusebox ???
Title: Re:electric mirrors

I think what you should have is 2 6 pin connectors on either mirror loom, these are joined together with another loom that goes inside the car between the 2 holes in the doors, and has 3 wires that connect inside the car, an earth a live and the wire that connects to the heated rear window switch:

[]-----*---------|---*-----[]
                        |
                        |----------1
                        |----------2
                        |----------3

[] = mirror
* = 6 pin connector
1 = live wire
2 = earth wire
3 = heated glass wire

My 'full loom' only came with 1x 6 pin connector for the drivers side, the passenger side was just cut and I have no loom from inside the car!

Post by: Dizzie on 22 January 2004, 16:17
there's a black and a white 3 pin connector for each mirror.

there is a 6 pin connector, but it's not needed. it just links the drivers side mirror and controler switch to the fuse box and passenger's side mirror.
Title: Re:electric mirrors
Post by: rubjonny on 22 January 2004, 17:01
So does that mean on my diagram there should be only 1 6 pin connector on the drivers side?
Title: Re:electric mirrors
Post by: Blue MK2 on 22 January 2004, 18:31
that means i have extra wires in the loom.

ohh well more for me ;D

cheers all
Title: Re:electric mirrors
Post by: Blue MK2 on 22 January 2004, 19:20
just pulled the mirrors off their casing.

I cant see no heating element. all i see are two extra wires that look like they go to the heating element (whch is missing)
 :-\
Ohh and both motors are identical. you have to remember which way they go otherwise you will press up and the motor will go left etc etc

?30 for glass, but you'll have to check it's the heated sort (should be for that price)

I know for a fact that the driver?s side glass mirror (RHD) is ?47+VAT from Volkswagen (as of December 2000). I contacted GPC who were able to offer me the exact same item for ?28+VAT.

can someone quickly tell me where i should/could take the 12(+) from the fuse box.

my mirror loom has been cut off at the ends and i dont wanna risk anything.. ::)
Title: Re:electric mirrors
Post by: rubjonny on 23 January 2004, 12:06
I phoned GPC a week or so ago and they quoted me
Mirror Glass driv??????? 36.43
Mirror Glass pass??????? 27.03
including VAT.  I think they worked out ?5-?10 cheaper than VW.

As for the 12v if you have leccy windas I would splice it into that, when would you ever use your windows and mirrors at the same time? ;) Then you could make use of the same fuse.  If not just grab 12v from elsewhere and get an inline fuse holder.
Title: Re:electric mirrors
Post by: Dizzie on 23 January 2004, 12:14
on the back of the fuse box there's a line of contacts. The ones on the left (when the fuses are facing you) is live. just plug it onto there. above the fuse box there's a 'claw'. That's the common earth point. Best to connect straight to there to save problems like I had with my lights.

just finished wiring it all up. They work great ;D

started working on the car at 9am, its now 2.30pm. Back breaker of a job  :-[

I used an in-line fuse and connected it up so that it workes when the ignition is on :)

thanx once again for the help all

It should be wired up with the ignition on, good to know you got it all sorted. on a cold day you get steam coming of the mirrors as the defrost lol

I've also sorted all the vents out on the mk3 dash so it was heated nicely and the screen cleared before I got out of town on my way home :)
