Hey folks!!
Been looking at this forum for a while now and been doing my project golf up for about 7 months now, but I haven't post anything yet. Looking for some advice on a few things... Firstly, my car is a 16v KR Gti. When I sold a couple of old bit to a guy he had a look at the car and was telling me that I can bolt a 9a bottom end straight on and it'll make a huge difference. I've had a look through the forum, and am I right in assuming that I can just bolt a 9a bottom and ( using a 9a head gasket) onto my KR cylinder head and keep everything else?
Just wondering as I've already spent a good few quid on my clutch, gearbox, cylinder head and other ancilleries and don't want to have to change any of em'. Also, does anyone know of a company that sells 9a bottom ends, reconditioned or otherwise? Or is it just a case of keeping my eye on the classifieds?
Secondly, The cars going to need painted soon and will also need a bit of bodywork. I've bought new boot and front wings but its going to need new rear arch panels cut and welded in, as well as probably 1 sill done. I'm also after getting a wing vent put in and the fuel filler changed before getting a full respray. Can anyone recommed a good bodyshop either in the west Lothian or Glasgow area that would take on the work and make a good job? I know a lot of these places now are just after jobs from insurance companies as thats where the money is!
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Cheers, Fraser

Welcome to the forum
The man was talking sense when he said to put a 9a bottom end in there. You can also use the 6a out of Audi's or the ABF out of the mk3 Golf. I've got an ABF in mine and it is a slightly taller block but hasn't caused any issues for me.
You can buy brand new 9a bottom ends from VW for around a grand I believe but it would be best to try and find a cheap second hand unit and rebuild that.
If you do a search on here then you should be able to find some more info on it. Failing that then have a looksie on this - http://www.clubgti.com/forum/showthread.php?t=41171 Make sure you come back after looking though!

Superb mate! Thanks for the advice and especially the link. Found a ton of useful stuff in there, though dunno how I hadn't come across it before... Think a 9a is definatley the way forward for me having read some of the results people are getting. Now all I need is a good body shop to send the car to whilst I sort the engine.
Anyone got any ideas? I know theres a reasonable amount of work required to be done on the car, so I want someone whos good at what they do and also prepared to put the effort in. I've found loads of coachworks but not heard any reviews about them from anyone and they appear to be more keen on gettin insurance jobs...
Cheers, Fraser

No worries mate, I found loads of stuff on there when my engine was being done.
As for your bodywork, if you can travel a bit then try out Hardcor3 on here. He's not long finished the boss mans Rallye and that look a top notch job. As well as a few other jobs he's shown on here
