First off, what size comps are you talking about?  13cm speakers can work well, but 16.5/17 cm comps will give you a lot more kick or midbass.  To get the best from any speaker, you need to fit it well, and look into using some sound deadening.

One of the most important aspects of installation is SOLID mounting of the mids, usually on a good thick MDF baffle.  As for good ones, it's all down to personal choice.  I run genesis, but there are loads out there, and you get what you pay for.

Erm.. the standard size component speakers in mk4 SE? not sure will have to have a measure, im thinking of just upgrading my front two components and sticking two 12s in boot.. see how i get on with them then maybe upgrade tweeters and back speakers, not going to bother with 6x9s

Components consist of Mids, tweeters and a crossover.  I *think* mk4s have 17cm fronts, but I'm not sure.

That sort of money is towards the lower end of the market, but shop around and you can still pick up some goodies.  This sort of thing:

You really need to find a decent ice shop and listen to some before you buy.  You'll need to amp decent components to get the best from them.  You'll want something like 2x50w rms minimum - especially if you're after some punch.  What subs are you buying, and what amp are you powering them with?

if you can stretch to a little more you will get a big improvement in quality. Look into Rainbow speakers. Their lower end stuf (frm the top of my head) is a bit more than you are lookin to spend but is utter class. I got focal p350's in mine before Id heard anything of rainbow. when i did hear of them though, the equivalent price speaker seemed so much better.

A semi-hijack here, but can anyone recommend a Rainbow dealer? I want to have a listen to these before I get my staff discount card out at work for some Inifnity's...

Cerwin Vega or Infinity Kappa

Very nice comps

Have the same set of Kappas i bought 6 years ago...no issues.
Tweeters are pin sharp and good thumpy bass.
