Title: Rear Parking Sensor Install, anyone done it?
Post by: DaveN on 10 January 2007, 14:10
Hi,

I'm new here, on day 3 of my GTi experience. I have a 07, Black with 18's, Interlargos and DSG.
A while ago I thought I saw an install diary here on retro fitting it but for the life of me I cant find it.
I think "The Doc" was involved in the thread but I cant find it.

I'm doing the ipod in the glovebox install this weekend so the parking sensors may be next if its doable.

Regards

Dave N

Yes Doc was the man. He fitted them to his wife's car but did not have time to take pics. He had offered to fit them free for someone who was close enough to travel to him and then take pics of the install for us all to learn. If you are near to him and he is still willing I would snap up that offer asap.

I dont think the getting the ferry from Ireland would make it worth my while, though a rip through Wales might be fun. I must have seen the pictures version on vwvortex.

Correct! I will fit a set for free so that I can post on here!

I can guide you via the phone / net but be patient as I dont have a "live" subject anymore!

I presume you can carry out basic wiring / drilling etc. if you can then its pretty straight forward!

Here are some pics of the finished article - the display is optional - I fit them in the lower part of the bumper because they are difficult to see, look better than in the upper and don't require painting!

Doc

What kit is that, its the one I'm looking for, if the install is a bit of drilling and wire splicing I should be able to cope. I like the sensors in the black plastic section then the sensors dont have to be colour coded.
About how long does the intall take?

Thats a sweet job doc. Is the system integrated into the car - i.e. does it come on when you engage reverse or is it seperately switched?

"What kit is that, its the one I'm looking for, "

It's a steelmate kit like this one on fleabay: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Steelmate-Parking-sensors-6-eye-kit_W0QQitemZ160069917459QQihZ006QQcategoryZ75330QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

"if the install is a bit of drilling and wire splicing I should be able to cope. I like the sensors in the black plastic section then the sensors dont have to be colour coded."

Me too!

"About how long does the intall take?"

It took me about an hour - you can save time if you can get your hands into tight sapces as you wont need to remove the bumper!

"Thats a sweet job doc. Is the system integrated into the car - i.e. does it come on when you engage reverse or is it seperately switched?"

Thanks, It comes on when you engage reverse gear, yes. You can install a switch if you like

And that includes the visual distance gauge which looks to be mounted into the rear view mirror?

That is a bargain of a price and may well result in a visit to god knows where up north later in the year! or I may be brave and try it....

Sorry mate - it's not in the RVM its in the headlining in the rear of the car - the 3rd photo is to show that you can view it in the RVM.

Oh yeah. Obvious now. But all the numbers are back to front in the mirror!

No, the numbers are back to front on the dislay so that when you look in the mirror they are correct ie it is 0.5 not 0.2

My advise is to go for this model without the numbers PTS400I

Now that's clever! Good prices too. I actually like the digital display, but I think I'm getting ahead of myself now as i still have 6 weeks to wait without a Golf! MR2 Roadster anyone......???

This also looks interesting - wonder if it will be compatable with the factory DVD Sat Nav display:

I've emailed the manufacturers and will post a response when received.

Yes as long as you have an aux input on your head unit

Cheers again Doc,

Is it possible to get some type of dual Aux input which would allow for this installation and also to play DVD's through a portable DVD player ?

If so, who manufacturers such a thing ?

Response from Steelmate - PTSV401:

"The system should be compatible as long as your screen has an AV output.

Launch date will be around the end of Feb but may be sooner we will keep you
informed. price is not set yet".

Doc

I have my kit and I am read to do the install, looks doable.
One question though, where did you put the control box that the sensors plug in to.
Did you hide it behind the covering in the side of the boot?

Hi

I placed it in the O/S/Rear panel.

You will need to remove the O/S/R quarter pillar cover to access the wiring to the reverse lights

If you need help PM me you number and I'll call you!

Cheers and good luck

So Dave have you fitted the kit yet? How was it? Any pics of the install? I'm still tempted to give it a go. What kit did you go for?

Hi,

I had a look at the OEM Volkswagen Parktronic, it is only with a buzzer/beep only so I decided to go with a similar one. I have bought the ParkitRight kit from their Ebay shop, as I intend to install it in the lower par of the bumper I bought theirs as the sensors come unpainted and the plastic colour is identical to the lower part of the bumper.

I had a failed go last weekend, I got the C-pillar off without breaking the little airbag cover tag, removed the panel, but for the life of me I couldn't identify the correct wire as I didn't have a volt-meter. I could make the kit work by attaching the kit-power-wire to the reverse light directly but as the light is in the tailgate I need to find it behind the c-pillar cover. Once I can sort this bit out I'll be brave and drill the bumper, from feeling around behind it there is the actual bumper bar behind the cover so location of the sensors will be important.

Weather depending, I'm going to have another try this weekend, I'll try to take pics as I go unless it turns in to a complete disaster and I end up crying for a month.

By the way the kit I bought was the 4 sensor kit from ParkitRight, though they have a web site www.parkitright.com (http://www.parkitright.com) where you can by for £58 you can get it from their ebay shop Parking Sensor Superstore for £29.50.

Dave

Once you have removed the rear lights and scres you can pull the top part of the bumper (the part beneath the rear lights) away from the car - you can then look down and SEE where is good to drill - you can also pull your sensor wires up through this space - also lie on your back and look up - there are plenty of places that are "safe"

Doc

I'm not being smart but what did you mean instead of scres?

What do you think of the kit he has mentioned Doc? Sounds like good value at £29.50.

I am not particularly interested in displays etc. So long as it beeps when activated and then beeps as warnings that would be good for me.

Having said just above about not wanting the display I was looking on the Steelmate site and like the look of the PTS400Q kit. Has a wireless display to mount in the front of the car. What do you think of this kit Doc, would it be any good or what do you recommend?

If ordering Steelmate I assume Doc its the matt black sensors to order? How good a match are they for the plastic bumpers? They look a good match from the pics of your wife's car. Also someone else mentioned about it being hard to get the angle of the sensors correct...........is there any truth in this?

I only use steelmate these days - they are of reasonable quality and dont give any problems - they have a nice beep etc.

No display I recommend the PTS400
With display rear                  PTS400I
With display F & R                PTS600MN

Is the PTS400Q any good Doc?

How does the wireless display get its power, is it a battery or something?

Ive decided not to put rear sensors on my gti, came to a cost effective decision and that was ...."to ban the missus from driving it" !!!  problems solved! :smug:
