Title: Dual voice coil sub, a bit of clarification required

I'm looking into buying an alpine sub sometime in the near future so I've been looking around getting prices. It seems all the alpine drivers are dual voice coil these days, now I know what this is and the benefits it offers. HOWEVER as I've never had a dual coil sub before I was wondering what options there are to drive it???
Could you:
Just wire up one coil and use it as a regular speaker on a mono block but not reap the benefits of the second coil?

OR can you:
Run both the coils in parallel (2ohm) from one mono amplifier (that's 2ohm stable)???

OR do you HAVE to:
Run both coils from separate channels/two separate mono amps and hope to hell that their outputs are exactly matched???

Ideally I'd just like a single coil and a decent mono amp setup, maybe that's out of date now???

Ok with a bit of research I've answered my own question!!!
Simply to make a speaker more versatile and allow different setup configurations and yes both coils must be powered.
