Had this by email today!
subject: New Yellow cameras on M5
Please be aware of the following:-
The new yellow cameras being installed between J29 and J31 on the M5
are not traffic cameras but are SPEC average speed cameras. The first
(and subsequent) cameras read your number plate and if you arrive at
the last camera too quickly it is £60 and 3 points. They do not use
film, and you will not see a flash. Prosecutions are electronically
produced.
There are 4 sets of cameras currently installed in each direction.
Although SPECs are used elsewhere in the country these I believe are
the first set to be installed in this region and are likely to catch
a lot of drivers.
I do not know when they will be switched on (they might be already
although there are no warning signs up yet but although warning signs
are in the Home Office guidelines their absence will not constitute a
defence).
The cameras are installed between M5 J29 Exeter (Honiton Road) and M5
J31 (A30 Interchange)

SPECS are stupid all you need to do is change lanes b4 you get to the second set and youll be fine hence they have a camera for each lane they cant track more than one lane of traffic not that ive tried this ofcourse.
-
exactly.
-
Dont speed
-
hmmmm ok then m8! so you never do then and which golf is it you own again?
-
I own a MK2 GTI, whats that got to do with speeding or speed camera's :undecided:
P.S. I was stopped for speeding once about 7 years ago and I learned the lesson, not rocket science
-
All cars have something called an accelerator pedal. The sole function of this is to control the speed of the car!
-
My point exactly Len
-
really? well ye learn somethin new every day. I got stopped and fined and points bout 2 yrs ago but it doesnt stop me speeding im just a little more careful of where I do it now. Like Spain for instance LOL!
-
Everyone speeds, but sometimes not intentionally.
I last got done in 1998 and learned from that. I am well behaved and I also have a RoadAngel that helps.
-
Oh I exceed the speed limits when its safe to do so and I mean safe coz of volume of traffic etc. not speed trap less. Over the years I must have commited over a dozen speeding offences and the law of averages says I will probably get caught again!
My point was speed and the car you drive has no correlation!

Ah ha ! I never knew that, thanks. Not that I care too much at the moment as the M5s miles away.

Agreed.

used to cross the thelwall viaduct every day when they were decked in lovely little yellow boxes above and learnt how to get through them a bit quicker than most never exceeding the 40mph limit tho! Speeding is all to do with time spent in your car waiting to get to your destination being shortened. We spend an average of four years of our lives in our cars and Blair and Brown want us to spend 6 in them I say screw em and to hell with the consequences!
-
a 'friend' of mine thinks a mobile van unit caught him doin 45-50 in a 40 zone, was just wondering how long does it usually take them to process it n u get it through the door. It was in the humberside area on the 16th of december '06.
-
I think its 28 days but have read anything from 7 -14 days on here before.

Be careful with this one. Apparently, this is merely a small technical hitch. Anyway, who's to say that it's not a double bluff, and the first and second set of cameras are set to record different lanes.
Also, you'll note that there are a few different sets of cameras, so you don't know which ones are switched on/off at any one time.
Solution - when you see SPECS drive within the speed limit. There's no other foolproof way of avoiding a ticket.
-
Dont speed
Do you tell your old man the same thing though ?

Unless we put duff plates on the car. **Not recommended**

On the motorway would you be done for doing an average of over 70 or are you ok up to say 80 ? Anyone know ?
-
its usually 10% + 2mph so you should be able to get away with 79 I was asking some cops for directions once and they let me play with their handheld gatso which was rather fun and they told me that this is the usual allowance but its up to the local constabulary to decide.
-
ive always thought it was 10% as well.... and bearing in mind most speedo's overread by about 10%, an indicated 80mph on the motorway in theory should be ok.
-
Aye that's what I thought it was, but I also heard about a camera in Leicester that did someone for 31mph ! The response from the Police ? The camera is calibrated exactly so if you're doing 31mph, you're speeding.
-
I've spoken to loads of Police in the coarse of my job and when I asked they have all said they give 10% plus 2 mph so I think it must be some sort of unwritten rule for most cases, sadly the safety camera partnership are another matter .. Gibby, good point mate, I do tell him not to speed but he just gives me the old "I was driving before you were a itch in my pants" type speech so its up to him  MaxiMK2 what car did you think I had . Dubtastic they usually post the INOP within 14 days and as long as they can prove it was posted in that time its O.K if it takes a bit longer than two weeks to get to you, then they have six months to prosecute and give points for the offense.

if your in the camper i dont think you have a problem
-
Mini metro lol no sorry rover 100 think theyre called now! jus kiddin I knew but i was jus sayin why would you buy that car if you didn intend on goin fast in it!
-
Oh O.K. get the point .
-
My speedo certainly overreads, i ave a tom tom 510 and noticed the ova day as i was driving along my speedo was reading 80 but tom tom was saying 74. I was pretty surprised at that.

to be honest mate, i think thats pretty normal... if u think about the 10% over read thing, then an indicated 80 is only 72.... granted not all speedo's will be that inacurate, but even so... when u factor in a different rolling radius compared to standard it can all make a suprisingly big difference.
-
I hate speed cameras. 31 in a 30 and 48 in a 40 b*****ds tomtom says 74 at 80 as well.
-
SPEC's aren't government approved, I think that's why they can only (currently) monitor your speed if you stay in lane.
Incidentially, most roadworks (that are there for more than a couple of days) on the motorways use SPECS cameras now, so just because you don't use the M5 doesn't mean your safe...

Carl, thing is when driving my camper it's really calm because I can't go very fast you have to trundle in the slow lane and you don't have to get involved with the hurly burly of getting in the way of the t0sser in his big car who you didn't realise actually owned that bit of the road.

Doesn't worry me as I slow right down anyway as I don't fancy hitting some poor bloke working at the side of the road.
-
although, you dont often see anyone actually working on the road works, so hitting someone is highly unkilely!

Oh contrare young Philipe ! They all stand around and never move so there's a very good chance of hitting one leaning against his shovel.
-
i suppose so, though theres not the same satisfaction when hitting a stationary target is there!
-
if u go at them horn blaring, u might even get them to scatter.... can take your pick, the heavily overweight one eating is usually the best bet

I had a mate who worked for the safety camera partnership (before he died in a bike accident) and he said was 10%+2 in Avon + Somerset anyway.
-
That may be the case but its not my experiance of them.

Bizarrely I can see you smoking a pipe whislt saying this. Possibly in a leather arm chair, by an open fire.
-
Yes but his bald head shatters that image!
very doubtfull you will hit any road workers on a motorway. Not whilst working! They have these concrete barriers at the working areas now! You definitely wouldnt want to hit those!
-

Can someone phone me an ambulance please as I think my sides have just split.
-
Only your sides???
-
I looked at the post today, the letters were strewn all over the floor, upside down, I turned one over to my horror- it said DVLA! i was like crapcrapcrapcrapcrapcrpcrap but then decided to look at the big letters plastered all over it...'Renew your tax disc online'..I was like phew! oh yeah my ruddy tax! lolololol  later on realising you get speeding tickets from the police....numb ass
-
yeah i saw those new ones last week, they where turned last week too! nice! lol
