Title: no reverse lights?
Post by: starsky on 19 January 2004, 20:08
I have owned my first mk2 GTI, 1990 8v for a month now and i have no reverse lights. i wasnt too concerned until i had to reverse up a dark road and had to keep dabbing the brakes to see things!!

I have checked the bulbls, fuse and all seem fine. There is no power going to the bulbs anyway when i put it in to reverse. Wherelse should i look for the problem???

The reverse light switch is on the top of the gearbox, check this, also check wiring for faults.

I have this prob.  Which for me is a worn gearbox, so I have to engage reverse then pull the gearstick back at bit & hey presto reverse lights well the car has done 157k so I'm guessing the box could do with a referb ;D

Hope this helps ???

I had this problem - this switch is on top of the gearbox and just screws in with about a 20mm spanner. Cost ?7 from VW. It's worth checking beofre you buy a new one that the small metal rod which engages when in reverse is working. Just unclip the wiring plug and unscrew.

Unplug the wiring from the reverse light switch and connect the contacts of the connector together with a paper clip bent into a "U" shape.

If the lights come on its the switch.

YEP, HAVE THIS PROBLEM TO!

But i've worked it out, your problay gonna use the reverse light in total for an hour a year, its gonna take longer than that to fix it, so.............

f**k it, leave it........

depends if you like seeing when your going backwards I suppose.

I'd say more like you want other drivers and pedestrians to realise your going backwards.

One collision with something you can't see or can't see you cause no reverse will cost way more in money (and time if you run some pedestrian over) then fixing the problem.

I have seen bulbs that have a built in reverse alarm so you can sound like a lorry,

No use if you got no reverse light power mind
