Check the boot light isn't staying on.

Try topping up the battery with battery water from a petrol station. Did the trick for me :)

maitainance free batteries..
alternator test??
start car
disconnect batery, car still runs
turn on lights, still runs
hit main beam, engine conks out..
is this normal for a golf, or should the alternator supply enough power to run the car, lights en all??

Don't recommend disconecting the battery while the engine is running :o. Voltage spikes can toast all your electrics and ecu. To check that it is charging, run the engine and check the voltage at the battery terminals, should be over 13.5 up to 14.5 max. Check for battery discharge with everything off, disconnect the earth terminal and with a meter on amps, one probe on the terminal and the other on the connector, should be next to no currant flowing. About 50 millivolts or less.
