Title: Bridgestone tyres
Post by: Shrodinger's Cat on 03 January 2007, 15:40
Anyone else got the factory fit Bridgestone tyres on 18" Monzas?

If so, do you also think they're sh!t-all use in the wet.  Not had a chance to try them in the dry yet due to full time precipitation in Scotland.

I have had Conti's and Dunlop SP Maxx and they were both great tyres!

Maybe I'll try Dunnys or Contis when it's time to change - which will be soon going by the amount of tyre I leave behind at every junction/roundabout/set of traffic lights etc...

Perhaps I'm just a bit over-zealous with the right foot in the wet?

Goodyear Eagle F1's are always popular and designed for the wet.

I'm currently on Toyo proxes T1Rs on my MR2 and these are storming in the wet and a bargain pricewise too.

My RX-8 has Bridgestone Potenza RRE040's and they are crap in the wet. I have no idea what tyres are fitted to the Golf I collect on Saturday.

I have just had two new 18" Goodyear Eagle F1's fitted to the front of our Mondeo ST and even though we have done 100 miles max with them so far, they feel great in the wet.

I will definitely consider Eagles in the future.

I'm also on Continentals on my 18's - no complaints so far...

THe Conti's on the front of the Mondeo ST (18") were soft as clarts. They lasted 11,500 miles before we had to change them...and that's with a very light foot!

I have a strange book from when the GTI was launched that says the 225-section potenzas are the best tyre choice - in fact they say "critical"

Therefore every GTi should have them as standard!

Right no I have Vredestien Wintrac (225-40-18)extreme on some cheapo GTI look-a-like wheels for when the weather gets a bit nasy.

I have the bridgestones on the OEM wheels and they seemed fined in the summer, but as soon as it went a bit cold and wet I lost confidence in them. I will be swapping for Conti-2 (or 3) when replacements are needed.

Phil, i think if you think around the £100 per corner you'll be in the right ball park. Take a look at www.mytyres.net  I've used them several times and they're both quick and relatively cheap. Just need to find a tyre monkey to fit them.

Those on 17s - I think £80-85 a corner is more like the going rate.

Just looked uo the site myself (now .co.uk) and it seems the Eagles are £95 each and the Bridgestones are £104, but bear in mind the fitting charge.

Thanks for all the feedback on this so far, interesting to see people's thoughts.

I see that the Potenzas are classed as a summer tyre, which may explain why they are pants in the wet?

That site looks pretty good wantmygti.  Who would you get to fit the tyres?  I presume most places would not be interested seeing as you are supplying the tyres yourself?

in the Uk we only need summer tyres - relative to the US we have no winter!

In the past i've found any tyre fitting centre other than Kwik Fit will oblige. Sometimes if you get lucky you can slip the lad doing it £20 and walk away, just go out of peak times. Kwik fit either rufuse to do it or charge loads.

www.blackcircles.com is also worth a check, and they have a fitted option whereby the garage local to you and selected by you calls when your tyres are in and arranges to fit them. All done and paid for in one transaction, but I've found the fitted price to exceed the mail order price by an unreasonable amount in the past.

The 18" Eagle F1's I had fitted to the Mondeo ST last week, cost just under £250.00 fitted. That was from a local place who I have always gone to. The fitter actually commented that (obviously with a different speed rating) they are the same section and size as a 911 - hence the cost :)

I'd not bother with the conti's there OK but for the same money you can get better. Goodyear eagle F1's or Michelin pilots will be what I'll go for next time. Been quoted fitted £128 for F1's and £162 for pilots but they are supposed to be the real deal. If you want grip and don't care about tyre wear go for Yokohama AVS sports they didn't last long but what grip!
