Title: My rant at PVW
Post by: RandomJord on 03 January 2007, 00:21
Whilst its on my mind id just like to raise an issue i have with PVW, now they get a bit of stick for not featurin enough "home grown" cars which is a bit sh!t but hey, theyre the supposed all singin all dancing powers that be. now when i was reading the front bit, yknow where u get a taster of the cars i was quite excited bout the 2 mk3s, home grown, on a budget, dailys. this could be interesting i thought, turned to the page and ........... 2 f**kin nigh on standard colour concepts!!?!?! only mods were pretty much smooth front bumpers an wheels, couple of other things of no note either, now too me these are extremely basic mods, an the had NO ENGINE WORK or engine tarting at all, what the hell makes these cars worthy of 4 pages in this supposed bible of all things VW? are they saying this was the best offering the UK had? now off the top of my head i can think of about 4 cars owned by people on this site more worthy than them! what a load of bollox, dissapointed.

Cheers for listening

Jordz

I counted 8 pages including pictures! unless you're talking about 4 double spreads..

I may be a bit biased but I do like those mk3s though, but what they've shown is that with little work they can create good looking cars. I agree the rocker covers with faded red paint was a little iffy! but they are daily drivers and not trailer queen show cars with chromed everything.

Saying that, I wonder when PVW will feature my daily mk3 with budget simple mods.

Another point I'd like to add to your rant is, the sale of PVW featured cars at overally inflated prices, both those mk3s have an asking price of £4800 and £5100 for an 8v gti colour concept! I'd rather get a Seat or mk4.

i thought that... dont have it to hand now, but im pretty sure the yellow one had a bit of engine work, custom exhaust and the like... plus they both had a fair bit of smoothing / general body work done, IIRC the yellow one was sat on 18's and had pulled / flaired arches, smooth boot lid with CL glass, blah blah blah.

i do tend to agree with the standards of engine bay's tho, at least tart them up a bit.  :nerd:
however.... i also think its good to get back to having daily drivers built on a budget featured in something like PVW, gives inspiration and hope to us who cant afford to spunk 20k+ on a show car as well as run a daily.

So when I change my bumpers/side skirts and have a respray mine will be worth 5k????

I dont think so!

Not when Billy can pick up an R reg 16v with full leather, air-con and sun roof for a Grand!!!! Admittedly it needs some attention to some bad rust spots but £400 should see that sorted.
Where do these inflated values come from????

if they get the prices they want just because they have been in a magazine feature who are we to moan?  If someone is stupid enough to pay those prices then fair play to the sellers.

True. I guess anything is worth what someone is daft enough to pay for it!

sorry i have to agree with the rant, pvw have the choices of looking thru all the forums, seeing all the project threads etc and they use those 2 cars, fair enuff they are nice motors, but surely if a colour concept can get in,my vr6 should get in just for having the engine! dont get me wrong im not b!tching at the cars, and to say they have been done on a budget, when there rims probably cost more than my car,is a bit much! there are plenty of awesome cars that have graced these forums over the last year,so how come not more have made it?! makes us as the uk scene look bad when really we probably lead the way at the moment!

I agree too. I was lookin through at them. Why put dailies like that in when people like joe and hardcor3 have created absolutely beautiful daily drives with their mk2 and vr6. They were done on a budget as about everything was done themselves and they are both a million times better. Come on PVW, pull the finger out and find the true beauties that are well and truely out there to be found!

Joe doesn't actually use his as a daily driver, but I'm sure that in the future it will have a feature in one of the magazines at some point. Especially as Joe has actually done all his own engine, all his own interior etc.

It's not just down to Golf+ or PVW finding the cars though, people can actually make the cars known to them. I'm all for telling them about Joe's car but in his own mind it's not finished yet but as soon as he says it's nearly there I'll e-mail the mags his project thread from here.

PVW sucks a fat one. I havn't re-subscribed.. Very lacking in technical content, written by children....
Jord is right, and yes Joe's car is Phat!

cheers gibby! but thats exactly the point. although its not a daily driver, without being big headed i can't see why my car won't be featured once i'm happy with it (doubt it'll ever be finished :P ) but if/when it does it'll only be because i'd have to let the magazines know about it, they're not going to come knocking on my door....

ultimately some people don't care if their cars are featured in magazines or not. i built my car for myself and it's pretty much how i always wanted it when i bought it 5 years ago, but to get a feature would be the iceing on the cake and kind of validate what i think of my own car. at the same time it offers it up for critisism which i hate! hence me not entering as many show and shines as some people think i should

thanks for the comment though phil and while i agree with jord that those two colour concepts weren't anything amazing, you can see why they did the feature, two simliar base models, few sublte tweaks, both cars you'd be happy driving..

and yes Joe's car is Phat!

cheers rob :embarassed: for some reason i always though you never rated my car?!

I've been in contact with PVW as there offices are only a mile or so away from me, I spoke to Simon there and he was interested in doing a piece on my car. Although my car is only a nice clean looking MK2 16v Golf that I have restored, Colour coded all the plastic's and taken all the side rubbing strips off NO ENGINE MODS still got all the orig grime etc no shinny bits.
He stated he did not know how bigger piece it would be but he would put it in there he asked me for some more pictures of the car finished and at the time all I had was pictures in my Garage but now I have more so maybe it will have a small piece in the mag. I did not do this project to get it in a magazine as it is my daily drive about that i like to keep looking nice,  but thought I would contact them to get a local (to the PVW offices) Golf in the Mag. As Joe said they will not come knocking on your door so if any one is interested in getting a piece in there magazine then give them a ring whats the worst they can say...No.... :undecided:

Joe, I can understand you not showing your car that much as there is too much nit picking in the scene, also the standard of the best show cars is very high, and to my mind would take either a very large cheque book and / or a LOT of time with a lit heated garage to match.
Like I said, i think your car is Phat, I particularly like the fact that you have done most of the work yourself.

Bum to it all

build a car that you like and want to use , be it sunny days and shows only , or everyday to the grind to work

an nuts to anyone that doesnt like them its YOUR car only you have to like it

An i think we are very lucky that here we have some feature worthy cars aswell as tales of strife and daily driver struggles

my 2ps worth

agree with the far too many b!tches in the scene! its all about going the way YOU want to,not slammin people all the time coz they dont have the latest fashion victim alloys or whatever! thats why i liked the dub scene so much when i first got involved coz it was soo diverse, now its as if you have to follow suit all the time!

i agree with you stu, thats exactly what my car is, a very daily driver, although i like to keep it looking neat and have a few things ive picked up from what ive seen ehre and in mags, itll never match those cars, but in the end, i'll be happy and i enjoy driving and playing with it

But if you read Golf+ (I dont know about PVW) there's occassions when people complain that daily drivers and/or standard cars aren't featured enough, but when PVW do just that, people still complain.

thats people for you mate.... it is impossible to please everyone, and its a lose lose situation for mag's like PVW and Golf+ these days.

if they only featured huge spec 30k+ show cars with crazy body mods, the euro people would complain its gettin too much like lax flower, and people who cant afford a trailor queen would complain about not enough "drivers" car going in. and as soon as they do feature some good quality daily drivers built on budgets, there will always be people who know their car is at a higher standard (take joe's mk2 for example) and that the standard of feature cars is slipping....

personally i think its good that mags these days do still feature cars of that level... and IMO its partly about being in the right place at the right time, and gettin your name out there... id place a large sum of money on joe's car bein featured if it was pushed in the right directions.

I like to see them do english built cars tbh, not all the time but more often than not.

Dont get me wrong i like seeing other nations in their doing it as well, like in the mark 2 madness issue of pvw. for eg the americans know how to make a good dub and then the dutch also seem to have put the drugs to one side and concentrated on dubs but i always prefer to read about a nice UK built VW's.

well i like PVW i like the way they do feature some quite standard cars as well as the big budget show cars! i think most people would jump at the chance if they were asked if they wanted their car featured! ive just picked up some german vw mags while over here and there is some horrors in it! i think england are leading the way with vdubs at the moment and pvw show a good selection of them! there realy is no pleasing some people with mag content!! never mind!

yea i think the germans have run out of ideas to be honest, so go for bright paint jobs and garish styling. My top three would be English, USA and Netherlands for styling.

I buy both PVW and Golf+ (which is not good on the pocket!!) I'd prefer just to buy one which has abit of everything in it.   But if they did that then the price would go up

Its a tough one.
i think it's nice for us to see a bit of reality in any magazine. it stops us feeling alienated by huge budget dream cars. But i agree that the feature was maybe a bit too big for the spec of the cars in question. i guess maybe it was nice to see 2 colour concepts in good shape in a nicely shot feature? But surely at the end of the day the we buy magazines as an insight into whats possible, or to take a look at the absolute cutting edge. we all know what the reality of daily drive's look like! but thats just my opinion
