Title: Alarm/Immobiliser type - Mk3????

Just about to get a really well-cared-for, low mileage, Mk3 2.0 8v. So, I'm in process of insuring it on line.

My insurer now wants to know what type of alarm/immobiliser is fitted (as standard) to this car......and they give a drop down list which includes a host of different factory-fit VW alarm types. I don't know which type it is!!! And I haven't got the car til later this week.

Please...anyone out there know what the factory fit alarm type is for a Mk3 2.0 8V (1998)??

If its the one with the single button with 4 pins on the botton of the fob it will be a "CONLOG". I also know a guy based in north London who can supply spares and replacements fobs if anyones interested.

What age is it? My dads R reg golf gti has the standard immobiliser, which inbuilt into the key. Think this system was only introduced in golfs around P reg, before that there was no standard immobiliser fitted, not certain on that but pretty sure. Pretty sure the 8v like my dads also never came standard with an alarm, only extra or afterfit. With direct line, there list had volkwagen immobiliser on it, so choose that, they did want confirmation of this and we had to go to VW dealership to get a letter confirming it had it and also a print out of the original factory spec of the car.

i'm after a fob i have a 2.0 8v p reg some wires were cut by insur because they could not start the car or stop alarm not sure what alarm but sure factory fitted would your mate need the make also where would i go to get the alarm wires sorted the red light still flashes some times while driving

A picture of the fob or smartkey would help.  Mine was factory fitted in 95 and is a VAG Scorpion 5000, if its the same you should have a wee backup smartkey that fits in a little slot wi an LED somewhere around the steering column. The smartkey is a small oblong plastic job wi hidden contacts that pushes FIRMLY into the slot to deactivate the immob if u lost the main fob (like me lol)

I have got a 1998 Mk3 8V R reg GTI. When I bought mine I asked the same thing as I was wondering for insurance.

As factory standard, my Mk3's didnt have an alarm fitted. It does have a factory fitted immobiliser which most people on here suggested is a Thatcham approved model although by now somewhat dated.

The code for the immobiliser is encoded in the key. I dont have a fob or anything else. New keys cost about £25 as I only had 1 and it was a bit bent.

My 95 gti key has a tiny smartchip in it - i know cos i put it in the x-ray machine at work. Its cylinder shaped and about a half an inch long and mounted at the edge of the plastic part of the key. Thats the standard engine-only immobiliser.

The full immobiliser / alarm was fitted by the vw dealer and i still have the certificate - its a VAG Scorpion 5000 series and I have contacted Scorpion about replacement parts but its obsolete and there are no keyfobs or chipsticks available now so its a new one im afraid  :cry:

i got a spare key cut for £15, thats with the coding of the transponder chip. i got it done at a local key cutting shop down the road.
