Title: Leaking gearbox mounting
Post by: jezza16v on 02 January 2007, 12:17
Hi all. My son has a Mk3 1600 AFT and the gearbox mounting is leaking a sticky oily stuff out of the top so I guess it is sha**ed .
It looks a bit fiddley to change, does anyone have any tips for a quick fix? and are the GSF replacements OK or should we stick with genuine VW? Its not tuned at all so we don't need anything fancy.
Thanks in anticipation for your assistance.

Hey i am not sure what the oily stuff is???
but if the mount is the same as what I've changed thay are easy to do. I believe it will have 1 large bolt in the middle that you need to remove (I used a grinder as mine was snapped in the rubber bush). Then you can lower the gearbox a bit using a jack to support it (oh yes put the jack under the box on some wood before you start and it can sometimes help to loosen the front mount as weel for more clearance) and you will see 2 bolt's either side of the mount, undo these and you need to pull the mount up out of it's holder (this is where you need the clearance as the mount is quite deep)...and to replace just reverse this.

I hope this help's but this is how i changed mount's on a 1.8

Hi bb, thanks for the reply. I can see the big bolt OK, will have to get into it a bit more to see the other two I guess. I think the oily stuff must be the hydraulic damping fliud? I can't see anything that would leak down on to it and don't know of anything else that would be as thick & gloopy.

this is a typical vw way of making thing's....the mount sit's into a holder with 2 14mm bolt's and then the gearbox mounting bit sit's on top of this and get's a large 19mm (i think) holding that on.You can't get to the other bolt's until the big one has gone and then you need to raise the engine/box to get to the other 2..i know i said lower before but my memory is crap sometime's
