Title: Rattling from car
Post by: T_J_G on 01 January 2007, 14:47
Right on cold start up my car really rattles, but get's alot better when it's warmed up.

It seems to come from the belt side of the engine, but not mechanically minded i'm not sure what it could be.

It's had a new head,a few months before i bought it the guy said.

My dad suggested maybe the bottom end was buggered. How much is a 2.0 bottom end reconditioned and fitted?

The car is a 1.8 PB Gti.

Thanks
Tim

It could just be one of your pulleys or the timing belt tensioner. It may also be the hydraulic tappets. When you say a new head do you mean literally brand new? Do you have receipts for it?

Could be, i may get that lot changed and see how we go...

The new head, i know no information on it at all...no receipts or anything although apprently cost the prev. owner £900..

umm best thing to do is check to see if there is anything loose at all if not your going to have to delv abit deaper...
now tappets can be cured with a nice oil change and 15w40 oil......

if that doesnt make a difference can you create a sound file of the engine running then we can hear what the sound is i.e metal or loose belt etc...

it sounds like tappets to be onist as when the oil thins the noise goes down...

May be worth doing an oil change on the old girl then...i thought about this on the way home from pub...

A sound file shouldn't be a challenge just dangle a microphone out my bedroom window..

I'll pick up some oil and filter on payday and do that.

Put some hydraulic valve lifter in there too, should help to quiet the engine down nicely.

Nice one thanks.

So i'll do an oil change and then add some of that and see how the noise is then.

If not i'll start on the belts.

It's all payout-payout-payout...

We could all guess all day long as to what the noise is, and all be wrong.. I would take the car someone that you can trust to give you an accurate diagnosis from a more hands on approach, it could be something that needs attention immediately, or something as simple as the fan on the alternator rattling....
