Title: TSR engines
Post by: fused on 31 December 2006, 23:15
Hey has any one got any feed back, good or bad for any of the TSR replacement engines???

I was looking at their DONNINGTON 8V 1.9ltr! For my '90 digi golf.

Would it be necessary to up-rate the clutch? if so any suggestions

Many thanks

have heard a few bad stories of quality of engines from TSR, may be different that they are under new ownership,
Might be a better idea to go with 2.0 botom end from Mk3 GTI and could be cheaper aswell.

My old m2 with 1.9 donny engine dropped rod with 25k on engine. My 8v now got 2lt block with diesel crank taking it to 2.1 well wicked.

they're expensive for what they are, just fit a 2.0 bottom end.  much stronger & cheaper!  The heads do flow well however :)

Thanks for the info guys!

I've had a look around the forum, I've got a '90 gti on digi, am I right in thinking I need the 2e Mk3 2L with the 2e dizzy as well?

Are there differences with ancillaries/hoses?

Are the any other parts I will need to make things go smoothly?

Thanks again

use the 2e dizzy aye, theres an extra breather on the front of the block, you can block it or plumb it it, choice is yours.
The anxileries are all different, you can keep em or swap all the old 1.8 stuff over, I'd keep the MK3 bits :)
Oh and a new clutch would be a good plan, buy a MK2 8v one and use your old flywheel, gearbox & starter motor.

RubJ,

does that mean I can't use the ancillaries from the 1.8? I can pick up a mk3 2e complete engine for £1oo off of ebay but not sure if it comes with ancillaries, probably not!

is it the 'kit DD2' from TSR I need to blank stuff off?

Are TSR actually trading again?

If you are getting your info from their website i warn you that it's still the old one from before they went bust. It would be worth checking they are back in business and offering the same kits.

thanks takethefifth,

Yeah they are trading, I've ordered a manifold from them, but engine wise I like the sound of the mk3 2L

You can fit all the old MK2 1.8 bits on the MK3 lump if you like, but ideally just keep all the MK3 bits.  The PAS pump brackets in particular are much better on the MK3.  Oh and to do this you need to fit the MK3 2e front water flange, as the hoses are different.  This has a takeoff for the header tank, so you block off the old one on the rad by screwing a bolt into the old pipe and jubileeing it.
You simply pull the old head off and fit your MK2 head, and everything plugs in :)

With a bit more effort you can go all the way like this, breathers need work though:

For £100 it better be complete tbh, I got mine for £40 which included pretty much everything, all anxileries, head, inlet etc :)
