Please help, my 1997 golf gti 2.0 8v with 166,000 on the clock, wont start in the mornings or after being left for a few hours, I have to turn it over for about 30/60 seconds then it will start but with a strong smell of fuel, I took the plugs out this morning after turning over and they where wet with fuel and the tops of the pistons where as well, once it has been started it will start every time first turn of the key unless i leave it for a few hours

Guys,
There's a couple of threads on here that should help you. I think i'd probably start with the ECU and fuel relays first and go from there....

I swaped the ecu over and the relays this morning from my mates car and it was still the same  could the injectors be worn out and leaking over night into the ports ? they have done 166,000

I have fitted a new HT coil and it has started first time in the mornings and seems to be ok now
