Title: 94 2.0l 8v MK3 golf, wont idle, fuel passes up the threads of no1 cyl.any idea?
Post by: landy on 29 December 2006, 22:36
Hi, this problem developed overnight, worked 1 day, didnt the next. Will only start if i use a bit of throttle but wont idle. We have noticed sometimes that if we cant start it then fuel gets forced through the spark plug threads on no1 cyl only, but literally trickles down the engine block (threads look fine). I have had diagnostics on it which initially gave a few faults but we weren't sure wether this was due to us unplugging things earlier while we were looking for problems, so we reset the codes and got the engine to start and run at about 3000rpm, checked the codes again and they were gone. Have replaced crank position sensor as when we checked, the wiring was a bit dodgy (also this was 1 of the codes initially given), also have replaced number 1 injector as we thought that it may be sticking open. Have tested the connector for number 1 injector aswell, thats pulsing ok. Had new plugs and leads, seems to be sparking ok when we take the plugs out to dry them as they always get soaked. We also noticed that when we last had the car running the cat and surrounding exhaust were glowing red hot, so much that they started to make the underneath of the car smoke. Assuming its due to excess fuel not being burnt in the cylinder, but ingniting in the exhaust instead. The engine codes is an ADY, done around 64000 miles, M reg. We've tried everything we can think of but its gonna start to get costly now if we just start changing bits or take it to a dealer for them to just change bits, just wandered if anyone has had a similar problem or have heard of it. Any help would be much appriciated, cheers.

Checked the cat, seemed ok. lots of smoke comin out the back still. had the diagnostics on it again, still no error codes. checked the injector timing tho and they r stayin open bout 3 times as long as they should. gonna get me ecu checked out next, not cheap 4 a new one tho, gutted. any other ideas (cheaper, lol) would still be much appriciated. cheers.

Sorry if you have already done this but try changing the fuel pump relay. And also the ECU relay. They are well known week spots on the MK3's
