hi i have spent most of the day trying to repair my damaged rack, basically i have swapped it for a manual rack which i was given, the main query is are all the universal joints the same on manual and power, i mean the bit which connects the rack to the steering column?
Also, i have to swap the waterpump pulley and belt, is there anything else i need to check? cheers

aye the racks are the same , the pas one just has hoses attached to assist. as you said just remove the pas pump + bits and belt and relpace with the none pas belt which is much shorter :)

are you sure i don't need a different Universal Joint from a manual steering car though? cheers for your help.

UJ is different on a non PAS rack. I may have one forsale if your interested

how much matey?

depends on the year i thought , i know they changed the uj at some point i presumed it was both manual and pas that were changed. but im only going on what ive read as mine is pas and i have no intention of going manual, golfs are heavy cars :p (and im lazy)

The UJ & UJ boot is different on a PAS rack. The UJ on a PAS rack is the same for all MK2s no matter what year, but Uku is correct the manual rack UJ was changed around 86, but neither the early or late manual UJ will fit a PAS rack ;)
The LHD & RHD UJs are different as well :)
