Title: what oil for service?

sorry for the newbie questions  :embarassed: but can anybody tell me the best oil to use in my 1991 8v mk2 engine and gearbox? have heard that castrol GTX 15 - 40 is best. Also what oil  is best for my gearbox? how often should i change the oil and filter? car has done 145k miles.

Synta Silver from either Vag or GSF. Genuine VAG non return filter.

80/90 hypoid oil for the box.
