Hi all.
Should be picking up my Mk5 GTi either next week or the week after (who buys at Christmas??/ I must be mad). It's a 55-plate 5-door DSG in Diamond Black with the 18" Monza II alloys on. Looks nice.
Changing my 55-plate RX-8 230 after only one year of ownership because I do not have shares in Shell or BP (17mpg and £80 this year on oil!).
The RX-8 is a fantastic car, but it does not do traffic very well and is quite 'angry' to drive. My wife says it's like the car is annoyed with the world - each gear change is accompanied by definite shunt which is even worse in traffic. Next time you see an 8 in traffic, take a look - you will notice at least one 'kangaroo' moment ;) Ha!
Unless you have some mods under your bonnet, don't bother taking on a 230 on the twisties - it's a stunning handling car. ;)
So it's off to the GTi for a more 'civilised' ownership proposition. After the test drive etc, I liked it so much I have almost convinced my mate to buy the other one that was for sale at the same garage!
Looking forward to ownership being as smooth as the DSG.
People have already suggested a re-map (and I have not even picked it up yet!), but I am worried not about MPG or insurance, but about reliability and longevity. Can anyone suggest a place to find experiences of people with re-maps over a longer period?
Cheers!

Cheers guys.
Currently trying to find a moment to have a proper read through some of the stuff here. Starting with the Dension Icelink Plus then re-map info, I will have some research to do this evening. ;)
I notice VW themselves are currently selling the GTi Edition 30 with 230bhp from what looks like the same engine as the regular GTi. Anyone heard of what changes they made to get the extra bhp?

Cheers again!
Interestingly, the dealer I am getting the car from said that VW are cutting back on GTi productoin in order to bolster residuals. They said they were getting only seven next year!!

Nice bunch here. :)
You don't see many Mk5 GTi's around here (Northumberland), so I guess I will retain some of my exclusivity I enjoyed with the 8.
