Title: MK2 Golf/Early Corrado metal heater insert trim
Post by: rubjonny on 22 December 2006, 11:06
I've just had a couple of sets of MK2 Golf/Early Corrado metal heater trims made up, perfect for LED backlighting  :)
The manufacturer is Metal Monkey (http://www.metal-monkey.co.uk/), who already make dial sets for many VWs, including the MK2 Golf 8v.  They don't plan to offer these for general sale, rather through me due to the difficulties of opening up the slider panels, although depending how much interest I get they may change their minds!  Have a browse through the site to get an idea of what styles are available, I wanted black originally but forgot to say so but bare alu is growing on me
These ones were supplied with clear backlight strips, you can get just about any colour you want, or you could use coloured LEDs, or make your own backlight film with the stock bulb or white LEDs :)

Check it out:  :)

The Corrado pannel will go into the Golf easily, you just have to make up a bracket to move the heater slider mech up.  You can also pinch the 4 speed fan switch from the Rado, you need the switch, the wiring from the switch to the motor and the resistor.  To fit to the Golf, just pop out the power feed pin from your old fan plug, fit to the Rado plug and fit the 4 speed resistor to the MK2 motor :)

Price for the heater sets is £20 posted, for this you get:
metal inserts
white diffuser panel
blue & red bit to go behind the hot/cold squares
backlight colour of your choice:
red, blue, green, aqua

Ok to make it easier for me & the suppliers, if you're interested can you replay with these details:

1) Quantity
2) Colour (Only silver (natuaral) or black are offered right now, but more will be added soon, course you could paint any colour you like!)
3) Diffuser colour (red, blue, green or aqua)

To clarify, you'll get a set of metal trims, a clear diffuser sheet, and a coloured backing of your choice.  You'll have to split the panel and fit yourself, not a hard job though if you take your time :)

P.S. tnx for the sticky joe!

Bloody shame, Ive got my vent face fitted in the dash loose (Unglued with a stanley blade), till I get one. :(

I might consider making my own using a method shown to me by a model train engineer, using a thin sheet of brass (from a model shop) dropped in a shallow plastic bowl containing battery acid (cuts as clean as a laser).

But I'll need a laser printer to print a negative on photo paper or use one of them pens you can get from Maplins to do etching with.

Have'nt seen Rubjonny in a while, he updated his parts for sale list recently, 2 weeks or so ago, he might be on holiday or bored with forums lately, dunno.

I quite miss his posts to be honest, he knows so much MK2 stuff.

Title: Re: MK2 Golf/Early Corrado metal heater insert trim

What I mean is if you want the panel background to be white when not lit or coloured, like how the std one is white then when you light it up it glows green :)

I think get a ton of white, red, blue & green stuff, then send each out with a white & coloured strip so you can decide if you want it coloured all the time, or only when lit up.

Right ok, sounds like a good idea, white and blue then.

Uku is out, (Don't need one) he PM'd me, as he sold his golf he has no need for one. So we're still on 10 as long as the others reply. Fingers crossed.

Yay, got it this morning.

Looks lovely johnny. I'll have to clean my plastic heater facia now (as its got a few small dinks in it) to make it look as smart as the metal trim.

A bit ot of p800 then p400 then p1200 and T-cut will do it.

I'm well chuffed, cheers.

Mine arrived today too, haven't fitted it yet - but I'm also thinking about fitting a led instead of the original bulb - anyone know if it's hard to do?
Title: Re: MK2 Golf/Early Corrado metal heater insert trim
Post by: rubjonny on 09 April 2008, 17:05
Ah thats good news!

I cut the plug off the back of mine, then you can push the remains of the bulb out the front. pop in a 5mm led and splice it to the plug you chopped off with a resistor and job done!  When i did mine i added an extra led to the opposite end, not sure how well this would work with the metal inserts!

What's the whiite diffuser for btw?  :embarassed:
Title: Re: MK2 Golf/Early Corrado metal heater insert trim
Post by: rubjonny on 09 April 2008, 17:14
diffusing
basically its in there so you can experiment with how you want the panels to work, maybe put it in front of the coloured sheet so it looks white till lit up, or behind to help spread out the light a bit more.  Thing with leds is they are very directional so the diffuser is supposed to help eliminate 'hot spots' in the back light.

I need to have a look at these myself, but I've been a bit busy recently with other stuffs!
Title: Re: MK2 Golf/Early Corrado metal heater insert trim
Post by: perryqhill on 09 April 2008, 17:16
Hmm, mines already painted red at the moment, as I done it just prior to originally seeing this thread.

So not at all sure what to try

Would you actually put the sticky side of the diffusers to the trim or to the heater panel?
Title: Re: MK2 Golf/Early Corrado metal heater insert trim
Post by: bomp on 09 April 2008, 17:30
I'd put the sticky side onto the existing transparent part, because if you stick it to the metal trim, you'll have a sticky bit facing outward, dust will stick to it no problem.

I'm going to rub the little white figures off the back of the clear plastic part, then put a lick of white paint right across the back of it instead, by doing it that way the light will always be the same reflected back.
Title: Re: MK2 Golf/Early Corrado metal heater insert trim
Post by: perryqhill on 09 April 2008, 17:39
Looks like I'll have to cut a little lip out of the heater panel where the clear plastic sits too, as without it the new faceplate won't fit in.

Post by: perryqhill on 09 April 2008, 18:27
Apologies for quality of this as it's taken on a camera phone - but it looks excellent when you're right next to it:

Title: Re: MK2 Golf/Early Corrado metal heater insert trim
Post by: perryqhill on 09 April 2008, 18:31
I'll have a look and see what it looks like when it gets dark, but it wasn't very bright in the first place, so i think I'll get hold of a LED for it.

In the end I had to cut two little lips out where the clear plastic sits and I fitted the red diffuser to the front of the clear plastic and the white to the back.

My only gripe (and it's a very small one) is that on mine the small aluminium strip above the heater control could do with being a little bit longer.

I've now got an golfball alloy gearknob, reasonable looking alloy pedals, the heater insert and door pins (the radio also kinda matches too)l.

I don't want to go all overkill on it - but after seeing the heater insert I'm considering the aluminium dials from metal monkey too - just not sure I can justify another £65  :undecided:
