Title: 17.1 mpg!
Post by: Mk2George on 20 December 2006, 19:00
Ok just playing with my new toy and I noticed the button on the end of the wiper stalk and had a flick through. Got to the fuel consumption and its reading 17.1 mpg and its not shifting even though ive been driving it over a week now

Is it buggered, does it need resetting or is my car genuinely drinking petrol like a Rolls Royce??

And advice is appreciated

is it setting 1 or 2 ? if its setting 2 check how many miles have been done . if it's loads then it'll take ages eg.

if you've done 1342 miles at an average of 17.1 ,  a weeks  driving won't change it.

This does give an average fuel economy and on setting 1 try resetting it and then join traffic....I had mine showing 3.6mpg coming out of the vw festival (heavy traffic and just reset trip comp)..If I do load's of short journey's mine averages 19.1mpg on setting 2 but the week's I only do longer journey's it show's 36.5mpg....

I've only taken my new golf on very short journeys to and from work since i've had it. I had similar when i played around with it, getting 23mpg max. Take it for a spin for 5 mins then reset 1 whilst driving. Mine Showed 34mpg when i did this yesterday

As its been said, it all depends what type of driving you do really. If you do inner-city stop-start journeys, then your fuel economy is bound to be abysmal. I've managed to get just over 41mpg through filling up, then straight onto a several hour motorway journey.

thats what kills me driving to/from work.
I start from cold and it's only a 2 mile/15 minute journey with an average speed of about 8mph so I barley get up to temperature.
I might as well bloody walk, shame I'm a lazy bastard

what buttonon the end of the stalk?? I'm guessing it's only on the posher versions of the mk3, like the vr6 or the Gti.

jon got 11 miles out of his when we went blasting around, lol. but that was a short journey changing gears a lot. he can get real good mileage out of it too. £35+ on runs to mine.

where as cab is doing about 20mpg on a run!

Yes, it's the MFA trip computer. Shows things like MPG, distance/duration travelled etc.

MFI? wot flat pack furniture?

Thought it was MFA, although I'm not sure what the initials are or what they stand for!
I just call it the trip computer!

Noticed my intentional typo

It actually stands for Multi-Funktions-Anzeige, which roughly translates into Multi function display or something.

Not seen very low temps on mine.

I did have a Mondeo company car that was affected by wind speed and saw minus 13 on there one day!

happy to hear that Suzy - hope it runs sweet for you!

Same here, never seen mine below zero even when it's -5 outside.

brr... lowest I seen is -2.

fuel ecomony only shows about 15-18mpg on my trips to work now, 5mins down the road kinda thing. I used to get average 37mpg and up to 46mpg on my 80round trip long commutes. But then I had to fill up mid week, now if i didn't travel over the weekends I wouldn't have to fill up a couple of weeks

although, I think my mpg has gone down a little since fitting exhaust, do I need to reset ecu for it to readjust?

You could try doing a reset by disconnecting the battery, but that usually only takes it out of safe mode.
The Mass air sensor should do any adjustments.

is it a performance exhaust?

if so, then it will lower your MPG, virtually all performance mods do have some sort of detrimental effect on MPG.
