if you look in the boot you should see (next to the spare wheel in the well) a sticky label that show's the colour code (3 digit's) see what they say and post back here and i will try and confirm the exact colour.. and crunching in gear can mean a whole load of thing's.. could be cable, syncro's and many other's beside (further info could be helpfull).. and to change a head gasket best look in a haynes as it's more involved than i could list on here

and changing a head gasket? what makes you think it needs doing? may be unnessercery. not worth doing yourself, specially if head itself is warped(doubt it but will need checking or the headgasket changing will be pointless) you will need to have the timing checked and unless you have a timing strobe(and know how to use it!) or can use the top dead centre timing marks on the cam/pullys, i really wouldnt bother! and i dont!
