Im doing exactly the same mate Pb head on a 2E block and i just got a metal headgasket from Vw for the 2E engine.

just phoned the local vw dealer they only list the stock head gasket not a steel one tryed big boys toys to they dont do a steel gasket either so ive put a order in with vw for a standard one 30 odd quid hope it does the job dont want to have to do it twice

The metal headgasket was only fitted to the later 2.0 8v, AGG or AGU or something? But to save the hassle, just ask for a MK3 2.0 16v ABF head gasket, its the same as the late 2.0 8v one and all ABFs had the metal gasket regardless of year :)
