Title: 1.8 8v water leak

its a 1990 pb gti just put a 2.0 bottom end in and it is leaking water from the plastic housing on the side of the head (the one above the gearbox) i have put a new seal and gasket on
does anyone know if there is a metal housing available or another way to get it to stop leaking

Its probably a crack in the plastic piece itself, I had a water leak from the piece on the front of the head (the one with the 2 temp senders in it) and I thought it was the rubber o ring so replaced it and it still leaked so I took it off and when I had a really close look there was a tiny crack inside side it that was allowing the water to bypass the o ring and leak out. I bought a new one from the dealer for tenner so you should be able to get the bit you need for a few quid !

don't think they do a metal one, but check the face of the head where the housing sits, mine was corroded and needed a bit of silicone sealant to plug a few ting gaps.

aye mine was corroded too , i took more drastic action though , angle grinder to the rescue hehe , i just removed enough material till it was smooth agian

Silicone sealant does this job on this problem. Used it myself with good results.

I have had loads of issues with both the housing you mention and the one at the front of the block. Basically they warp and have to be replaced with new. Once this has happened a new seal will not work. Also, make sure that the surface it attaches to is clean/ smooth.

Don't know about metal option.

I Had to buy one yesterday, They warp as there made from recycled plastic. £4.37 inc rubber o ring. Saves messing with sealant and risk it still leaking.

There is indeed a metal housing available, MK1s & I think early MK2s have em.  There are several styles available though, some have 2 outlets, sender holes etc.  Just buy a new plastic one from vw, wont be much more than £5 and should last a good while.  As said, its important to clean up the mounting face so its nice n flat before you refit, or it'll just leak again!

bought a new plastic one the other day going to fit it at the weekend when it is light . and i flatted the head with wet or dry with a sanding block till all the pitting had gone what a joyous couple of hours that was

of precision metal removal ps still havent fitted it yet
