sorry to hear that jason, i know it need that bit of welding on the floor, i was amazed when you said it passed an mot without having it done!!!!, i think your welder may be trying to get extra dosh out of you cause i know it werent that bad, i would never had sold it if i new you were going to have bother with it!!!!, if your going for a total restoration job then yes it may need a few bits doing, but the car was a run around car for me and was never going to win 1st prize in a show and shine competition!!, well wether you decide to get the work done or not youve got far more dosh worth in parts  than what you bought it off me for!!!

you have to be carefull as even the newest mk2`s are gettin on for 12yr old now,its ok seeing nice shiny bodywork buts it whats behind the bodykit and underneath where the old tin worm will be lurking I`ve seen some nasty goings on in these regions on mk2  GTI`s a lot newer than yours as well, you pays your money and takes your chances at least you only spent ?300 and can get it sorted out hope it all goes ok,

yeah its cos tight arse vw wouldnt make them the other way round cos they didnt know if the market was going to take off in the uk. think they might have been wrong!

rust on a c plater is hardly surprising at least you can still buy the panels from vag, imagine if you had bought a mk1  :o

Personally, if the floorpan is rotten, scrap the car. Or keep for as long as it continues passing an MOT.

I wouldn't spend any major money on the vehicle at this point. Drive it till it dies.

Wipers were orginally on the wrong side. Its not that VW didn't think it wouldnt sell, its just that they were plain lazy. The change was mid way through E plate cars on the first major facelift.

What is disgraceful is that 2003 Clios STILL have the wipers on the wrong side! Or hadnt anyone noticed?

if it can be welded then weld it, shame to throw away a car, especially a vw, if the rest of it is ok. besides if everyone had that attitude then there would be NO mk1's on the road at all!

jasonpi-restore the bad boy!!!!!!  ;)

yeah, welding is fine.  but you wont cure the problem. your just putting your problems off for another day.

striping the car down and replacing a whole section like that is quite simply uneconomical unless the car has some intrinsic value to you, eg, its special cause you had your first shag in it or something.

but if the car is devoid of such sentimentality, bin it. save your money, and find one that hasn't got a rotten arse. there are plenty of VWs still out there that are okay.

again, personally, with all its known problems i'd be asking a very serious question - what don't you know about? strip it to the shell. the story will get much worse before it gets better.

i did bin a D reg golf driver last year. the floorpan needed welding. one side of the car was immaculate, the other side was my grandmothers patched quilt. But the car was quite sound, the engine was okay, everything was okay and worked. But it was rotten. Bin.

jason, if i had the spare cash id buy it back off you cause its a bloody good car, yeah its got a bit of rust but its 18ys old and been at a seaside town all its life!!!!, dont bloody scrap it, theres many a car out there thats been welded and as long as the work has been done properly the rust will not spread!!, i would not go to the extent you are going to goto but i wouldnt scrap it, id get then small bits on the floor done (so it is legal cause clearly your mot tester had his contact lenses out that day!!) then sell it if you arent happy with it, the amount of tax that was on it and a full mot youll make some ontop of what you paid me for it, as i said it was my 2nd car(run around and was never gonna be a prime show car!!)

agree with Knite there have welded many a car and if you do it right it doesnt spread at all,of course there is a limit but if its just isolated areas and not gapping rot its easy enough to sort and will last as long as you want the car for,the mk2`s are better than other makes of cars from this era,but there are still areas under the car that start to go and will start to give owners grief in a few years time..
