Title: A case of the niggles....
Post by: robster23 on 13 December 2006, 16:08

Right, i've been driving around my recent purchase for a few days now. Got the tracking sorted so it doesn't scare me so much round corners! Time to sort out the little things that are niggling me! I really could do with your wisened eyes looking at this list and telling me if they are just 'what mk3's do'

Model: Mk3 Gti 8v 1994 108000mls

Temp Guage - never gets out of the three lines right at cold unless I am standing still, it also runs better after its been standing still - thermostat?
Rear Wiper - Can't turn the blooming thing off once its been used once?
Headlight switch - When I press the brake pedal the foglight indicator comes on! (Its the rear light only switch) - Whats with that?
Strange noise coming from engine on acceleration that isnt the manifold guard rattle (that's being fixed tomorrow). Sounds strange and only makes it with my toe down, if you aren't really on the gas it's quiet.
Gearbox - when cold, feels like i'm changing gear in thick toffee.

All help greatly appreciated!  8)

Temp gauge - yes probably
Rear Wiper - press down to activate press down again to stop. If its not stopping after second press then get it checked. Maybe a relay????

Light switch - must be a short somewhere.

Noise - let us know how you fix that please! (manifold heatshield I mean)

Gearbox - may need an oil change

Thanks Len,

In relation to the temp sensor is that Yes the thermostat needs changing or Yes that's normal?

 8) On a grey day like today its difficult to get clarity!

I would say the thermostat, but seeing your interest in another thread it would appear it could be the temp sensor!
Normal for the Temp gauge is dead centre or straight up.

1. Do the thermostat, and replace the temp sensor, it also does the ECU so worth changing as this affects the cold start & engine fueling :)
2. If it wipes constantly, not 1 sweep every few seconds its probably a dead motor, my golf used to start start wagging its tail when I went over big bumps till I swapped it
3. More info on what kind o noise pls :)
4. Gearbox oil, if its an 020 rod box use Redline MTL, if its an 02a cable shifter use Retline MT90.  Swapped MTL into my MK2 and it made a massive difference to shifitng when cold :)
