Hi all
just solved the problem of the electric windows, fixed the Ipod adapter and now this.
Yesterday on the way to pick up the children she went down a narrow road (2 way though) and a large truck misjudged the width of the road and she ended up swerving to the left and driving her new car up a 6 inch pavement  to avoid being rammed by the truck.....
The damage?
Two new 18' inch Monza rims.
Two new bridgestone Low profile tyres.
And panelbeating to the sideskirts as they got a bit damaged.
The rims are scratched and chipped and the front tyres are missing large chunks of rubber
New rims arrive on Friday...
Just thought I would let you all now that the 17' inch rims can be repaired if damaged.
But the 18 inchers cant so stay away from narrow streets and large trucks
Cheers all

sorry to hear about your acciendent mate, i know the feeling, (see other post) with regard to 18 monza's, they can be repaired, my car had 1 scratched before i bout it off the forecourt, and vw got it repaired good as new. it was 2 inchs long so a fair size,

I was torn between getting 17 or 18 inch wheels, but after I scuffed one of my 17 inch ones the other day and had it cheaply and well repaired by Chipsaway, I was happy to have gone for the 17s, as the guy told me 18inch ones cant be fixed.
-
2007GTI - If you don't mind me asking, how much did Chipsaway charge for an alloy repair? I'm in need of one myself
-
Autocar this week have an article on the repair of their 18" Golf Gti alloys - pictures in all!
-
agreed and it looks like a good job 'n all
-
Any chance anyone can upload this document as i don't get the magazine and it may be useful in the future...??
-
Chipsaway charged £65 (inc vat) for one wheel.
-
The company that do the autocar fix are called www.spitandpolish.co.uk
-
Why would the 18's not be repairable?
-
i dont know why peeps are saying they are not repairable, mine got repaired no problem, depends who does them , they are a tricky wheel to get the polish effect finish on them.
Made me laugh , i had a slow punture last week and took the car to national tyre centre, it took them 20 minutes to get the tyre off the rim because the fitter admitted he was struggling to get the tyre off without marking the rim or damaging the tyre also. i could tell sat in the waiting room with 3 fitters around the machine trying to get it off with me looking on from the waiting room!. i think it was the the tougest job of the day! all for just £15!!
-
 Super mirror polished finish - I think its more down to the quality - and these guys were realy good (5/5) according to the article.
-
Doc, can you upload the article from Auotcar on the repair?
-
It was in the mag and it seems to have vanished in my office somewhere - I'll dig around today - if I find it I will photo it and post here 4 u!
-
here you go!

No probs - sorry that the second half looks like shat!

Hey again
Truth be told, they can be repaired.
The reason the rims are not known as able to be repaired is mainly because they are coated in a metallic gloss finish.
Many cars dont have this finish s it is very expensive i.e the reason why the rims are pver-priced.
They can be reapaired but the chances are more likely that they will damage the rim more instead of make it better.
So many dealers and panel beating shops etc are not happy to take the risk that they will have a return and will then have to repair the rim at there own cost. Many companies would rather not do this.
That was my dealer and panel beaters story. I trust the word of my panel beater as he recently panel beated several dents out of my Pajero  Due to incoherant (is that the right word) children who threw rocks at (probably out of Jealousy  He has tried buffing the Monza rims and repairing them but says it is very difficult to fix.
So new rims are probably the best deal, besides second hand or repaired rims would mean a loss of value so i vote get new rims.....
Cheers all

Excuse the errors :embarassed:
I typed this fast and only looking at it now did I see my mistakes :undecided:
Anyway chat later
-
Just a quick heads up.
I used spit and polish to do a custom job on some alloys i bought for my integra.
They did a stunning job and the alloys which looked really rutted came up looking like new. would have no hesitation taking my alloy there, but will wait for it to have a few more marks on it first!

Lol
To whoever pulled this post out of the past thanks. Lol. Posted this ages ago.
My dad actually typed the heading and most of the post and I just proof read it. I was not there when the accident happened so I left it up to him to post.
Thanks heavens Im not 17 with a missus and kids . I would die. Lol, Im not some fake internet guy. If thats what you were thinking Mew.
Any other questions?
-
Didn't even notice the date tbh, just that there were quite a few people reading the topic. It just confused me that you were 17 yet (what i though was) you were saying my missus and kids

I know this is an old thread but my recommendations for the 2 best wheel refurbishers are:
1) Lepsons
2) Pristine alloy wheels
They repair alloys and strip paint and recoat using OEM techniques. They are not cheap but the work is of unbelievable quality and I have used them on most of my cars with absolutely no flaking, fade or any complaints whatsoever. They can also match the identical paint code of your alloys. The only downside is you have to send them your wheel(s) as they don't operate a mobile service (which is why they achieve such good results).

Thanks for the heads up on that Alex. I think quite a lot of people probably refer to this thread.
Mew. I am 17. But its my moms car. lol
