Title: Smoking the lenses
Post by: Cupra Turbo on 16 January 2004, 23:52
Ok, ive got the rear cluster smoked (standard unit) and ive got the side repeaters on the wings smoked...

the front indicator, the clear blank and the fog lights are all clear... i know the smoked indicator lenses are around ?20 a pair, but where do I get the smoked blank & how much? and also do I need a whole new fog light unit for them to be smoked or can I (like the indicator) just replace the plasic "cap"?

You could try Volks-apart, they supply new and used parts.

www.volkswagenspares.com

Or phone them on 0208 317 2330

I've bought stuff from them in the past, delivery usually couple of days.

I want all my lights smoked... rear cluster, wing indicators, front fogs/indicators/blank plate ... headlights .. I dont want a bit of crystal when the rest is smoked.... it'd look stupid.

mate if you are talking about putting darker plastic on...
you can buy a tinting spray and do it yourself you know?

Same rules as applying any spray apply but the effect is decent enough and for ?10 a can would meet all your needs. Personally I would leave the fogs clear, they honestly look better imho. You will lose brightness from indicators and fogs unlesss you use brighter bulbs and attract unwanted attention from insurance assessors should the worst happen!

If you want to smarten the existing look, you can get indicator bulbs with a silver coating, this irradicates the orangey tint you get from the bulbs even with clear lenses. I believe CA Autotech sell them.

If you want to spend over ?100, Mk4 style headlights look much better that the Mk3 items.

If you want to improve safety/visibility/looks, get some decent xenon replacement bulbs which are brighter and whiter than standard or cheap upgrades (I recommend Biolights) and are the next thing down from a full HID kit, which is about ?400 a set!

You can get LED bulbs for the sidelights which are blue/white rather than yellowy too.

Hope this is helpful mate  :)

yeah cheerz mate, but a few points to follow onto

1: I hear the mk4 lights give mad visibility to the sides (prolly depends on make)
2: I have Philips VisionPlus bulbs in my dipped and main beams... better than normal bulbs.
3: I love the smoked effect... i want everything smoked...

weird really... I HATE SMOKERS LOL!!
