After years of vw bashing I finally decided to try a gti, bought myself a decent 16v for a really good price too! Picked it up on sun and drove it home, drove about in it sun night, went to go to work on monday morning and it just would not start!!!
It was turning over but would not fire.
Today had the same problem so I changed the plugs, leads, rota arm and dissy cap and it burst into life although it was misfiring slightly. Took it for a spin and left it outside my mates for about an hour and when I went to leave it wouldn't start again.
Anyone got any suggestions on a route to recovery for me?

Sorry mate should have got an 8v hey Len!

No sorry mate, you must be gutted!
You spend your best on the car you want.
I hope it's a cheap fix.
Fingers crossed for you.

Is the engine turning over but not fireing up? If so could be the imobiliser.
To check this test the order of events i.e. is the coil putting power the the leads, is there power to the coil.
-
cant see it being the immobiliser as if you sit there for 15 mins trying to get it going it does try to start but runs very very lumpy and will then try to cut out. From what I can find from searching previous problems, think Im gonna try replacing the ecu temp sensor 2moro first.
-
Could be a dodgy coil. If its running rough try replacing the ECU relay as well.
Once you get it running right you will be exstatic that you bought a 16v!
(and not one of those poncey 8v's)

can someone point me in the direction of where this ecu temp sensor is please? Just been out in the rain trying to find it and cant see the wood for the trees!
-
on a 16v I belive its on the right side of the head somewhere?
-
I think i may have found where it is supposed to go, on the right hand side of the head and in a plastic flange off the coolant pipe but this currently does not have a sensor in it? It just has a plastic top, kinda like a cork in a bottle, to stop the coolant coming out? Any ideas?
-
I don't think thats the one, looking at ETKA its a 2 pin sender threaded into the side of the head, or perhaps a single pin. Its not the one with a green/black wire, the other one :)
-
Ah, that would explain why Im struggling to find it then, VW supplied me with a 4 pin sensor! So looks like it the wrong one then?!
-
yeah the 4 pin one is for the 8v, muppets!
-
Cheers for all the advice fella, Im off to my local vw dealership to play hell with em!
