Title: Speedo has failed...
Post by: Gary Cundliffe on 12 December 2006, 16:35
Touched lucky with a set of motometer working clocks today for £20.

Prior to fitting these the speedo failed!

So the new clocks are in, and the speedo cable isn't turning when i drive. Also the gear on the end is red and as far as i know thats wrong. The old clocks and the new replacement set are 140mph motometer ones.

Perhaps thats why it always under-read a little.

Anyways what do i need to order?

don't understand what you are asking.

If you've replaced 140mph clocks with 140mph clocks and the speedo still doesn't work then the problem must be with your speedo cable, indicating that your previous set of clocks were fine and you didn't need to replace them. Speedo cables don't cost much new, I would personally just go and buy a new one. Have you taken the speedo cable off the car and given it an inspection under some decent lighting etc?

aye the cables probably rounded on the end in the gearbox , buy a new one and that should sort it , if not your star gear that drives the speedo in gearbox is knackered (not likely) which is a much longer job

You need the white speedo drive gear instead of the red one and a new speedo cable. Should sort it.

The clocks were replaced due to the usual MFA and revcounter fault, but just prior to fitting them the speedo went; the cable had snapped and a new one has sorted it.

As for the speedo gear, two people have said that i need a white one for the 140 clocks, but it seems the factory fitted a red one! its had 140 clocks as standard.

I does under read, at 30mph i'm doing 27 according to one of those signs that displays your speed. which i suppose is better than underreading through a Gatso!

i doubt "the factory" would have fitted a wrong part!!

True, but it was its original cable, original gearbox and original clocks....

I'll be trying a white cog though to see if it makes it all the more accurate, its only 'bout a fiver it seems.

Are you positive they were the original clocks? If it had had the 120mph clocks once upon a time then the red gear would be correct.

i have 7 cars at the moment and they all read faster than the speed things at the side of the road.  fact is that its very rare for a car to have an accurate speedo.  for this very reson the police allow a 10% speedo error when calcualting speeds. oh and its another reason why you always hear about some 17yr old corsa hitting 155mph on a 1.1 ltr lump with a K&N filter....

Another way to check if your speedo is running out, Drive in 5th gear and say your rpm is 2000 your speed should be 40mph, in other words 20mph per 1000rpm

Hope that is clear enough?

I had similar problem after fitting 3 speedo cluster I eventually got one that was reading what it should.
