Title: Big Bass without a sub
Post by: Si on 11 December 2006, 15:30
My Mk1 Caddy is almost ready to start building up again but im at the stage of thinking about stereo i need.
Obviously the Caddy is a pickup so i have no boot to hold a sub in a box, so im thinking of having some decent speakers instead.

Can any1 tell me how can i get BIG Bass just from speakers and Amps? (no subs).
What make speakers? will it sound good? etc.

Cheers guys!

A pair of Kenwoods 7 x 10's!

Do ya have much room behind the seats Si?

If not some good components in the doors.

im 6ft 3in so i usually have the seats right back. I could prob get away with having approx 6inches behind seat to play with.  :undecided:

I was thinking maybe a set of big speakers mounted behind seats, with an amp bolted between them in the middle, and a set of 6in in the doors?!

As you can prob tell, im more of an engine man and less of a sound guy!

Hmmmm with only say 6" then you will probably have to look at some fairly flat 6 x 9's. By flat I mean the depth of speaker front to back of magnet. Most of them are free to air so no need to worry about an enclosure.

dont bother with behind the seats , just go for some big speakers in the doors imo
if moneys no object then custom door builds and these http://www.audioscapedirect.co.uk/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=3_38&products_id=112&osCsid=1f53ce734c50d2f2b6085d8e1ec49e41 (http://www.audioscapedirect.co.uk/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=3_38&products_id=112&osCsid=1f53ce734c50d2f2b6085d8e1ec49e41) with a decent amp and you'll see bass equivelent to a standard sub :)

Impressed with Uku's reply there. Only trouble is they drop to 70hz. I would try some 8"s in the doors, obviously using pods. A sub can be mounted in the front. It lives in the passenger footwell in a custom made box...if made and done correctly can sound very good and look good too. I have seen and heard one in a 106 GTI and was highly impressed. Obviously you cant go for a 12" or 15", but a 10" up front is great. I will see if i can get some pics and exact measurements for you.

What you need mate is Focal Utopia's 5WS

Cracking little sub that is 5 3/8 inches in size, plenty of sub frequency!

Sorry to hijack, but what kind of speaker pod you going to have to use for these? Surely a standard build - or even an audioscape item - won't provide enough volume for a decent amount of bass...?
