Title: Steering wheel locks up when turnng right
Post by: viktor on 11 December 2006, 11:38: Got abit of a problem on my 8v. Sometimes when I turn the steering wheel to the right, it stops turning! I can still turn it back to the left but if I got to do a sharp right turn or go round a roundabout, i've had it. It has started to happen on a more regular basis.

Has anyone ever experienced anything similar and if so, how much did it cost to repair.

2. Check the track rod boots arn't being sucked into the rack

Post by: kt_gti on 12 December 2006, 11:03: Ive had exactly the same problem and i think it's the power steering belt which is being fitted this weekend only cost Ãƒâ€šÃ‚£5 everyone has told me it is this. But i'll let you know what happens when the new one is fitted :smiley:

Post by: Len on 13 December 2006, 16:34: Deffo the belt then! You can try tightening it but in the end you will need to replace the belt.

if its notchy as well i'd say definatly belt

very scary tho when you turn into a roundabout and it wont turn!!! argggghhhhh :sick:

Post by: Len on 14 December 2006, 10:07: Oh yes very scary! first time it happened to me I was coming back from Brighton along the dually that links up to the M27 around chichester and there are loads of roundabouts and normally you wouldnt slow down much if no traffic as you can use bothe lanes like! hmmmm yeah that fine until the steering goes dead and it takes ya a while to realise you need to use more force to turn the wheel!!!!

Post by: viktor on 18 December 2006, 21:12: Took my Golf to the garage today (Mill Lane Garage, VW & Audi Specialists) to sort out the steering. The belt was slipping so they replaced it. Cost Ãƒâ€šÃ‚£3.88 for the belt and Ãƒâ€šÃ‚£11 to fit it in + the VAT.

At first I thought it was PAS fluid level. Checked that and it was fine. Then I thought it must be an air lock in the system so I bled it. Since then it's not done it but if a PAS belt is only a fiver I might aswel change it!

Mine seems to stop working when the revs drop to idle?
