Does this car come with a cat?
and does it spit flames or does my m8t have an overfuelling problem?

setting up properly can you explain more please?
so it's not a problem with the ignition i.e spark plugs or dizzy cap?

take it for a tune up, get a garage to set the fueling and ignition up so its running properly. Where abouts are you located?

so the ecu needs re-setting? what acctually needs to be set up?
it's started to run rough now and droping and almost stalling??

As neaty says,The engine needs to be tuned and reset correctly.Give kingsway vw a ring or call down there.Speak to andrew lennox,I'm sure he'll have a look at it for you.Heol y gors in townhill or 01792 654842

Ive recently bought the car *cheap as chips* and found the car is seriously over fulelling, im not noticing it performance wise, its more the smell from the exhaust, smells like ive dunked the car in a texaco tanker for a hour...Im having problems with my manifold aswell, seems that either the gasket has gone, or the manifold has cracked, it sounds like a tank...Ive just put it up on ramps at a garage but there is nothing visably wrong with the manifold....of what i can see of it anyway :) *sigh*
Also my window seals have given up and leak down my door card, my headlamps seem to flicker...clearly a wiring problem i know, but is there a common fault? anddddd *deep breath* i cannot see my speedometer in the night because the light behind it has given up the ghost...anyone got any tips or anything to do with common faults and easy repair on a mk 2 gti 16v?

try having a look through this thread in case you want to have a bash yourself for your fueling woes, its how to set up a 16v so hopefully if its all set up as stated it should sort your problems

sounds like your exhaust manifold gasket has gone, is it like a ticking sound?
as far as your dash lights are concerned i am pretty sure you can get the bulbs from GSF or if not VW as I had mine replaced but cant remember which one i got them from.

If the exhaust system/manifold has been checked over for leaks and is found to be fine but it still sounds like a tank, then it could well valve train noise - most probably from the tappets. That kind of noise also occurs when your ignition is retarded too much.

Sounds like you need to spend a bit of time messing with the timing to get it where it should be.
The tank sound could have something to do with the set up of the car as fuelling is constant on the 16v so not as likely to overfuel as an electronic injection system.
It's about the spark sparking at the right time, if not it causes unburnt fuel to get slung down the exhaust which detonates as it leaves the manifold into a hot exhaust making the tank noise, this will also make it spit flames as it mixes with air at the end of the exhaust. It will probably backfire quite a bit as well.
Try changing the dizzy cap and rotor arm as it may be a weak spark, then get it into a good garage to tune it or if you fancy have a crack yourself that link is more for setting up the air fuel mixture which I don't think your problem is I would go with the timing been out.

aye sounds like the timings out to me by quite a few notchs. hence the flaming as the combustion is escaping out the exhaust. unless you have a very leary cam like i did on my ol 205 which caused flames when i backed off the throttle after planting it :D (the twin webers always over fueled too!)
