Hi guys,
I need to change my username cos I have had to move the 1.8t on due to 6 break downs in 6 months! I've just taken delivery of my 1.9 tdi match yesterday on an 03 plate very nice it is too just got this really annoying problem. Whenever I listen to the radio the passenger side speaker is distorting on the bass. CD is fine even at high volume, just radio causing problems. I have removed the aerial and cleaned thread with WD40 and cotton buds, turned the bass down to -1, checked the balance etc all in order just can't seem to get rid of it. The trim doesn't appear to be loose around the speaker now I'm stumped! Any advice would be much appreciated.

Right, a little update the distortion started happening when playing CD's as well and it is only the passenger side speaker. I decided to take the door trim off on the inside for a look at the speaker and found that the speaker itself is probably at fault. There is a lot of staining around it, I reckon the previous owner spilled coffee on it! Can anyone recommend a decent aftermarket speaker to replace the existing one with. I notice it is riveted into place! I have a beta head unit.

Possibly, sounds like it might have blown. Try replacing both speakers with a decent pair of coxials, or if you're feeling adventurous try replacing the tweeters with the ones from a good set of components.
Buying expensive front speakers is always money well spent.

Hi, thanks for the advice, I have found a company called braybrooks http://www.braybrooks.co.uk/ who have suggested Alpine Type S speakers to go with my beta head unit. They can fit them for £50 which seems reasonable considering the old ones will have to be drilled out. Anything else I should ask for like sound deadening material you reckon?

I would suggest you wouldn't need sound deadening unless you plan on doing more stereo modifications.

Hey guys, I finally got my new speakers yesterday, what a top guy Neil from Braybrooks is! He spent 3 hours on my car did a very pro job by the time he finished it looked like VW had always intended it to be that way. I went for new tweeters and woofers a system from Alpine called SPS 171A which involved Neil fitting a crossover network hidden behind the door skin. It sounds great and can go as loud as my ears can bear without distorting so very happy. This cost me £247 including everything. Thanks to those of you who gave advice, happy Xmas
