Title: Windscreen Wiper Spray
Post by: geeteeaye on 07 December 2006, 12:27
Anyone had a problem with spray being left on the windscreen when the wipers are on?

Since I got my GTI, when the wipers are on the downstroke, they leave a spray right in the drivers field of view, really annoying. You do a single wipe to clear again, and on the downstroke you get another bit of spray right where you are trying to look!

It doesnt happen all the time, but most of the time. If its raining heavily its hard to tell as the window is so wet anyway, but if its raining lightly or you are just cleaning the screen its a real PITA.

Changed the wipers 2 weeks ago, genuine VW ones, didnt help!

Help! Its doing my head in!

Yup it used to happen on my Mk5 GTI and happens on my new R32 - reckon its a design fault and not much you can do about it unless someone wants to enlighten us?   :undecided:  I agree though that it is REALLY REALLY annoying.  I keep my wipers on until it goes or keep flicking them on and off in an effort to get rid of as much water as possible but there's always a bit left

Yeah, I get that too. Doesnt help that the p[assenger side doesnt do it. Has anyone changed wiper to try to cure it?

I get exactly the same thing on my Mk3 - looks like a long standing design fault!!

Yeah its really annoying. And not very safe either.

Doc - does your prescription of Rain X actually fix the problem...or does it just mean you don't have to use the annoying wipers so much?

I had this on my Bora, I added a spoiler to the wiper blades and that helped a lot, it has something to do with the airodynamics lifting the wiper away from the screen on the downstroke, adding a spoiler pushes it against the screen and it clears much better. :)

That makes sense as it does not happen around town.  Have to get down to Halfords then.

Yes, I get the same problem.

Whenever I have had to replace wipers for the first time on previous cars, I've always replaced them with PIAA ones.  These have a high silicone content in the blades and come with a sachet of liquid with which you treat the screen before using them.  They are not cheap but, in my experience, they never squeak or smear and last for a long time.

I'm not saying they'll cure the problem we're talking about here, but I'll certainly be giving them a go when the time comes to change the OE ones!  See following link for more details:

These wipers can't be fitted the the Golf Mk5 (at least there are no compatible ones listed on the website) presumably because of the VW specific fitting?

Oh dear, back to square one...
