Not been using it since the leicester meet mainly cos it had a paddy on the way back, and made lots of strange noises. Investigated the engine bay a few weeks back and noticed that the alternator belt was having a serious case of mr floppy. Fair enough i thought, i will just tighten it up when i can be bothered.
Went out this afternoon. It's bloody eaten the tensioner for the alternator belt.  took me a bastard age to get off, and now i need to go hunting for one before next weekend. Otherwise i canna afford to get home for me DJ Shadow gig.  makes me a angry panda.

^^ This part if anyone has one laying around off a 1.9tdi 80. (or knows of anyone with one)

I think you need to give up owning cars and just walk everywhere. All your cars seem to do is break all the time... :lipsrsealed:
Good luck finding the bit you need though mate, nothing worse than having the motor go t!ts up when you have places to be and no spare cash...
-
Have you tried ringing Audi up with the part number Slick?
-
Aye but they want silly money for it.
Going to be ringing gsf, as they have something which sounds like it, but not entirely sure if it is it or not, will have a word from them. Just wondered if anyone knew someone breaking one.
-
oh dear len i think you might have upset the big fella!slick just a thought send a message to g60-girl she should be able to source you one alot cheaper than you can get it.its got to be worth a try dude.
-
Doesn't look dissimilar to my TDI tensioner. Have you tried cross referring it with some Golf/Seat/Skoda engines? Might give you some more options at the scrappy :undecided:
-
There must be an audi 80 forum somewhere , sorry i cant be of more help
-
i havent a clue beyond the fact its an old square 80 at my lcoal scrappy on bristol.. dont know if this helps Slick, let me know if you want me to go check it out

What has actually broken up? is it the tensioner roller?
If it is then that is fitted to the mk3 golf diesel engine, passat, audi a6, and some 4 cylinder petrol engines as well.
You need to find the source of the problem, i think the tensioner should be an automatic spring loaded type, has this failed as well?
Unfortunately Len might be right for once, when the belt was loose it should of got sorted. Oh well you will know for next time
If you want the full list of cars that the roller fits then let me know, or if its a different part then i'll do a search for you.
-
The following mk3 engines have that tensioner arrangement....
AAM,ABS,ADZ,ABF,AEK,AEP,2E,ABU,AEA,ACC
2E is 8v gti and ABF is 16v gti.
You should have more luck finding one of them, or try vw.

The belt was fine when i checked at the side of the road, so it must have happened on the way back. Either way, it hasn't been driven since, and it drove fine.
the actual arm that comes off the mounting bracket is fine, and in one piece. The roller however is in a chewed up shape. I removed the belt to get better access, and just unscrewed it from the arm. It looks like the bearing in the middle has been forced through the middle of the wheel and has broken up as well. So just need the roller assembly effectively.
Cheers for the engine codes, will get ringing round tomorrow. Also drop G60-girl a message and see what happens. Cheers chaps.

I've seen that setup before, it was on a mk3 gti 16v.
How much have audi quoted for the part?
-
If you are going to try a scrappy, the following mk3 golfs will have it:-
AAM,ABS,ADZ 1.8 single point injection (GL,Driver)
ABF 2.0 16v gti
AEK 1.6 multi point injection
ABU,AEA 1.6 single point injection
2E 2.0 8v gti up to 10/94(digifant)
Mk3's which won't have that setup are:-
AAA VR6
ADY 2.0 gti 8v 10/94 onwards (simos)
ABD 1.4
So nearly all mk3 petrol engines!
Hope that helps

humm... well yesterday didn't go as planned, so we restart today, already gone out and retightened everything i loosened off yesterday. Stuck a freshly charged battery on there, and hopefully that will get me to northwich. So then i can go to town on it in a mates garage. I will get it sorted by this afternoon if it means me bleeding.
DJ Shadow needs to be seen. 8)

i got my fingers crossed
-
Don't you just hate it when, some monkey from a parts company sends you the wrong belt. Spent f**king ages on the bastard today, loosened off all the bloody pas/water pump/ crank side. Then fitted the pulley a couple of times, walloped it with a hammer to get the spring loaded tensioner arm loose, messed around with the bloody belt for AGES! multiple trips to halfords and the belt was too small.  Ended up going home early cos i was feeling rough as a dog, and have consequently been sh!tting meself inside out since about 3 (bet you all wanted to know)
Need to find a slightly longer belt now and then we will be away.
Oh and it made me bleed. Still, all good fun eh.
-
always had issues with partsmen
the run in guns blazing because they "know" what it will be
no matter how many times you tell them its not the one listed , or some monkey at the factory mustve run out so fitted another part they still manage to Feck it up
-
Oh and it made me bleed. Still, all good fun eh.
Not nearly as much as it did swear.
